Year 10 Work Experience Reports

1)  Royal Flying Doctor Service - Conor Snedden

Monday, 6th June started with a long drive to the Dubbo Royal Flying Doctor Service Base (RFDS). I met Jeff around 11:00am where I was introduced to those in the office before heading into the classroom to discuss non-technical skills. These skills include many great life lessons as well as skills that would be a great asset to take into a business or company, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about them.

Day 2 started at 8:30am where we once again returned to the classroom to reiterate non-technical skills to a slightly larger group. After lunch we checked out the Flight Simulator which I had been eagerly waiting to visit, where one of the flight nurses was put into the pilot's seat to help them understand that a plane will not fall out of the sky without control from the pilot. This was very interesting and reassuring to learn. The nurse was then coached in how to control the plane and land it using the autopilot in the event that a pilot was to become unconscious after take-off. The last few hours were spent finishing off the last two modules of non-technical skills.

Day 3 once again started in the classroom with quite a large audience. We went through a PowerPoint presentation, discussing all the safety equipment that can be found on the aircraft including life jackets, life rafts (sometimes), first aid kits, survival kits, etc as well as discussing the plane's emergency exits. We then travelled to Dubbo RSL pool where we jumped in the water and put on a life jacket to experience the different process around inflating a life jacket as well as the other features and water safety. This was lots of fun. We then returned to the RFDS base and headed out to a plane to see all the safety features in real life.  We also practised using the Emergency Exit window panel out onto the wing, and the oxygen masks.

On Day 4 I had the opportunity to spend a few hours in the hanger speaking with some of the pilots, including Brett and the Senior Pilot, Craig, who shared their experiences and gave me some great advice in regard to becoming a pilot, as well as life in general. I am very grateful for this. I also got the chance to spend some time in one of the cockpits of the RFDS plane, going through some safety checks and the pre-flight checklist, and was also able to inspect the outside of the plane. This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip!

While Day 5 was the last day and the shortest, it was like putting the icing on the cake. I was given the opportunity, helped by Jeff, to fly some laps around Sydney in the Flight Simulator, learning some of the basic controls of an airplane. Some of my landings were definitely bumpy and the take-offs were all over the runway, but the whole experience has increased my desire to become a pilot even more.

The whole five-day experience was unforgettable and allowed me to learn so much. I would like to extend a big thank you to Jeff, Cameron and James and all the RDFS team. It was an amazing opportunity and they gave so much of their time and effort into making sure I leant and enjoyed the experience!

2)  Sydney Kings - Julian Brischetto and Arthur Pero Gorrick

A few weeks ago, Arthur and I were extremely lucky to have the opportunity to spend our week of work experience with the Sydney Kings and Sydney Flames.

We sent a few 'shot in the dark' emails and we were rewarded with a response from Kings' HQ.  We also used the School's new online Work Experience Hub which Ms Michielsen is very proud of (as she should be). This new system greatly streamlined the paperwork and insurance processes, which eliminated a lot of the tedious document copying, scanning and signing that would usually be needed.

A few weeks later we were on our way to Kings, with absolutely no idea what to expect from the week. We did all sorts of jobs such as making spreadsheets, making Tik Toks and other social media content, allocating tickets, sitting in on meetings, helping out at clinics and game day but, most importantly, Arty is the current UNO Champion of the office!

We are both big fans of Basketball so this was probably the best week we could have asked for.  We extend big thanks to Ms Michielsen for helping us out and organising the work experience hub and the Sydney Kings for hosting us.
