BUILDING CHARACTER AND RESILIENCE

Respect

"Respect yourself and others will respect you." - Confucius

Respect means always acting with deep consideration for others and being thoughtful to the feelings, rights or wishes of someone.  It can also mean giving them honour or regard because of their position, abilities or relationship to you.

Respect in a school context most often means speaking and acting in a way that shows consideration for both fellow families, students and school staff, but it can also mean valuing diversity of culture and other aspects about a person or group.  Respecting someone else means listening to them speak even when their opinion is different to yours and not ridiculing someone or speaking negatively behind their back.

Without respect the world becomes a very uncomfortable and even dangerous place to live.  Some of the worst forms of hatred in history - and today - have originated in a lack of respect for one group or another.  If you want others to be considerate and kind towards you, as well as listen to what you have to say and care about what you do you need to give respect in order to gain it.

Practicing Respect.

Ask yourself:

If I'm being honest, is my heart/mind always respectful in most areas of my life?

Are there any situations where I find it difficult to show respect?  How do I handle that?

Are there any incidences of disrespect recently that I need to say sorry for?
