Pink Sock Day Wrap-Up

Saturday saw the blue and green cast aside to allow pink to take centre stage at Waterford for our 7th Pink Sock Day. All for a good cause, the community united and pulled on their pink socks, raising awareness and much needed funds for the McGrath Foundation.

The McGrath Foundation supports thousands of families across Australia that have been affected by breast cancer. It provides free support for those suffering with breast cancer and relies on donations from the community to be able to provide this. The money that was raised by the College community on Pink Sock Day will be used to provide individuals and their families with nurses from the time of diagnosis, right throughout treatment.

It was amazing to see the TC community gather as one and embrace the theme of the day. This event started in 2016 and we are proud it continues as an annual event that has become bigger and better each year. All the 1st sporting teams played their part in the fundraising and promotion of the day by purchasing and wearing pink socks during their game. The players also presented flowers to their mums as a sign of gratitude for their unwavering support. Although the primary goal of this day is to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation and their cause, we see it as a day to stop and reflect on the influential women that are present in our lives, remind ourselves how lucky we are, and say thank you.

The raffle was a roaring success and I take this opportunity to thank TC Old Boys Nic Martin (18), Brandon Starcevich (17), Tryse Rioli (22), Mr Chris Mayne and the rowing community for their efforts in sourcing prizes. Congratulations to lucky winners below!

  • Pink Football signed by Nic Martin – Jordan Sharp
  • Signed Collingwood Jumper – JC
  • Signed Brisbane Lions Football – Peter Torre
  • Signed West Coast Eagles Football – Pat O’Rourke
  • TC Framed Rowing Oar – Patrick Carney

As always the day was a roaring success where we managed to raise over $2,500 for the McGrath Foundation. I take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the organisation, especially the 1st Team managers and everyone that got on board, wore pink and donated.

Year 8 Nutrition Talks

The Year 8s were fortunate to have Julie Meek and Neil Kilkenny come in and speak to the year group on the subject of nutrition. Julie is a performance specialist and sports nutritionist who currently works with the Perth Glory the Gymnastics National Centre of Excellence. A link to Julie’s blog can be found below:

Neil Kilkenny is a professional soccer player who recently won the A-League title with Western United. He also has represented Perth Glory as well as many English football clubs (Arsenal Youth Academy as well as Leeds United, Birmingham City and Bristol City).

The overall theme was to ensure boys were able to better regulate their moods through better food choices and timing of meals. Julie spoke about each day being “a game” and how important it is to refuel throughout the game to ensure optimal performance at school and at home. She provided tips on what boys should be eating and gave some great ideas on how some foods are better utilised in different parts of the day. Neil was able to share his experience with nutrition and playing soccer at an elite level, providing boys with a great insight into the importance of eating right.

We look forward to welcoming Julie back next week as well!

Prefect Perspectives

Once again it has been a busy week for all the TC boys who have been putting their heads down and working hard, eager to finish the term off strong leading into the term 2 holidays.

The Year 10-12s are starting to get back into the flow of a weekly school schedule of work after completing their Semester 1 exams and getting prepared for Semester 2. On the other hand, the Year 8s and 9s just started their exams this week, so best of luck to them!

A Mass was held for the Year 12 cohort on Tuesday this week in the chapel, which was a great opportunity for us seniors to once again gather unified as a group together in the limited time we have left. Time is passing very quick this year and it’s been very important for us to make the most of the limited opportunities we have left and enjoy each other’s company!

On Thursday, renowned Australian public speaker Paul Dillon came in to speak to the boys in Years 10 to 12 about the dangers of drugs and alcohol we can potentially face growing up. The presentation was very important as it ensured we are properly educated and up to date with alcohol and other drug information which commonly affects teenagers and can put them at risk.

We are very grateful to have Paul back as it’s been difficult to have external public speakers visit us due to COVID protocols over the past couple of years. Luckily, we are starting to head closer to being back to normal and got the chance once again to be offered important insight on how to stay safe and responsible when partying during our teenage years.

It’s been another hectic week for the boys, but they’ve shown tremendous resilience to continue to work hard and represent the school proudly with lots going on. Best of luck to those competing in sports fixtures this week as we go against tough competition in Christ Church!
