Respect around the School – Caring for Country
Throughout this Semester the Caring for Country elective class, along with many of our Aboriginal students and members of our wider community have all been working together to help heal and care for the Country upon which our senior campus sits. We commit to actively connecting with, and caring for, this Land, and this involves respectfully learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, philosophies, and practices about caring for Country, as well as physically demonstrating respect for the waterways and Land on which we live and learn.
We have incorporated First Nations perspectives into the College’s Strategic Plan, policies and practices and provided positive opportunities for all members of our educational community to grow in their awareness of the importance of First Nations land management and sustainability practices.
Although we have had some very wet and cold weather, we have been able to implement our Cool-Fire Burning Programme and supplemented this with small hot fires to burn excess fuel loads which we have been busy gathering and clearing. Last year we also harvested seeds and roots of many native plants with cultural significance and have propagated many of them ready for planting later in the year.
And most importantly, as part of the tunapri makuminya Project, we have begun embedding these practices and perspectives into our curriculum for all students to access, from Bush Kinder to Year 7 Storytelling to the Year 9 History interactive experience of the Gumnuts to Buttons programme.
