From the Head of Junior School
A true example of the spirit of being a Virgilian has been on display during the soccer season. Alex Bennett, who attended the Junior Campus, Years 3 to 6 (2014 to 2017), and Senior Campus, Years 7 to 10 (2018 to 2021), has been helping coach and umpire one of our Prep Under 6 soccer teams on Saturdays. In addition to this, he has also been coaching seven of our Grade 3 boys in their club side on a weekly basis, most recently coaching them to a second place in the Devonport Cup on the weekend. Thank you, Alex, for continuing to set a fine example to all current Virgilians.
Another example of Virgilian spirit is on Tuesday mornings, at the Aquatic Centre for Water Polo Training. Hunter Wright, Krystian Jankowiak and Kye Direen, all Old Virgilians, attend water polo training to coach the Year 7&8 and 9&10 teams. These boys are also on pool deck on Friday evenings to coach these teams for their games. We love it when our students put back in.
Congratulations also to Hunter who is off to Serbia to represent Australia in the Junior Men’s Team who are touring Europe in the coming weeks.
The Virgilian Way
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, our staff are working on the Junior School version of the document The Virgilian Way. Our current school focus of the Virgilian Way is Kindness.
Our statements of what Kindness looks like in the Junior School are:
Assembly
This Friday June 17 Grade 4P will be hosting Assembly at 2.15pm.
Mid-Year Assembly:
Date: Wednesday July 6
Time: 1pm – 2.15pm
Venue: Nagle Centre, SMC
Our Mid-Year assembly is an occasion where we gather to recognise the efforts of boys who have performed well in the classroom and in specialist subjects. Class teachers award 5 certificates to boys in their class and specialist teachers award a certificate per class. A School Spirit Award is also awarded per class. It is also an opportunity to showcase our Junior School Choir. Some of our classes will also be performing musical items.
Mid-Year Reports and Parent Teacher Conferences
Mid-Year Reports will be released to parents on Wednesday July 6. Parent Teacher conferences will be on the first day of Term Three, Monday July 25, which will also be a student free day.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Mrs Jen Sutton
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 22nd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
The photos below show books being read aloud in the classroom and during Bush Kinder at Austins Ferry .
P and F
We look forward to welcoming you to our next P and F meeting will be face to face at the Junior School on Wednesday July 6 at 6pm – 7pm. There will also be an option to join online.
Cross Country Team
Last week we recognised the members of our Cross Country Team. Next week, they will have their first events. Symons Plains Tasmanian All Schools Cross Country is on Tuesday June 21. The next two occasions they will compete are: JSSATIS on June 28 and STCPSSA on July 4. Representing St Virgil’s is a great honour and thus comes with expectations around class work and behaviour. A student’s position in the team will be subject to him fulfilling his obligations in the classroom and on the playground.
St Mary’s College Mini Winter Feast: Friday June 17
This Friday evening, June 17, St Mary’s College is hosting a Mini Winter Feast from 5.00pm on the College Green and Nagle Centre. Part of the evening will involve two discos for Grade 3&4 and Grade 5&6 students. There will also be spit roasts, curries, warm drinks, and musical entertainment. Boys and their families are encouraged to attend.
Gadomski Cup
Next week some of our aspiring footballers in Grades 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to represent SVC in the Gadomski Cup. This will take place on Thursday June 23 between Hutchins and SVC at The Hutchins School. Now in its 5th year, this football match aims to honour one of SVC's former students, Alex Gadomski, who passed away from bone marrow failure and to raise awareness and much needed funds for the Alex Gadomski Fellowship.
There will be a medal presented for best on ground for all three matches. Parents are welcome to attend. Students/families to be advised to bring money for a BBQ and rattle the can fundraiser. The team will be announced on Friday June 17.
All three matches next week will be live streamed via Duff TV.
