Sport P-9

Fast Track

This term in Fast Track we have participated in many exciting experiences such as the Love Me, Love You program, the Richmond Football Club excursion and learning about the Cardiovascular System. The Love Me, Love You program was run by ex AFL footballer Lance Picioane. He was talking about his life experiences and his mental health. He discussed the various steps and processes which can help assist our mental health and the importance of balancing daily life with sport and other activities outside of school. The Richmond football club was an amazing experience because we got the opportunity to witness what an elite sporting organisation is like. We got to see the team training session, view the amazing facilities, participate in a high performance training session and discuss what study and employment opportunities are available to us in sport. All our theory classes were based on the fascinating cardiovascular system. We got an inside look into how this system works, like how the heart functions, blood cells and their function, the pulmonary and systemic circuits and what happens to this system during exercise. Our practical sessions have related to our theory lessons and we have been working on our sport specific skills and our fitness levels. We look forward to more exciting experiences next semester.

Primary Sport Report

This term in Primary Sport, our Years 5 and 6 students were involved in the Bridge Inn South District competition in a variety of sports including Boys Football, Girls Netball and both Boys and Girls Hot Shots Tennis competition. All teams competed extremely well displaying our school values each week and putting forward their best possible work. Our students committed to after school training sessions during the tournament to prepare themselves for competition ahead. Congratulations in particular to our Boys Football and Girls Netball A teams for finishing in the Top 3 of the competition. Well done Lakes Legends!

Prep HPE and Year 9 Coaching and Umpiring

As part of the Coaching and Umpiring program the Year 9’s have been working with some of our Prep students during their HPE session.

The Preps involved have had a Year 9 buddy who has worked with them in the first semester. The Year 9’s have been helping their Prep buddy with the development of fundamental motor skills, understanding of safe play and fair play.

The opportunity to work with our Prep students has given the Year 9’s an authentic opportunity to put in to practise a range of coaching practises and to be able to build a rapport with a young learner. The Year 9’s have assisted PE staff and taken the lead in a range of PE classes which has helped their ability to plan and deliver a coaching session.

Our Prep student’s have enjoyed working with their Year 9 buddy and to have thrived with a Middle Years role model to look up to.

Both groups of students gained a lot from working together over the semester and the PE team look forward to finding other opportunities for Early Years and Middle Years students to work together again.

Secondary Sport

Term two has seen students from The Lakes compete in a variety of sports. In May, fifteen of our year seven, eight and nine students represented The Lakes South Morang P-9 School in the Whittlesea Division Athletics competition held at Meadowglen athletics track. The team demonstrated great determination and mental fortitude, with all team members putting in outstanding efforts in their respective events. The Lakes finished in eighth place overall and are hungry for more success in next year’s competition.

Our Cross-country running team also enjoyed great success at their respective event, with six members of the team qualifying for the regional event. At regionals, our Athletes faced some very impressive competition with the pace of each race being significantly faster than the district event. Although we did not achieve any placings at regionals this year, our team demonstrated that they could indeed compete at a high level.

Our year seven and eight girls competed in the Whittlesea district Australian Rules Football event in June, with many of the team making their competitive debut. The girls showed great determination and outstanding teamwork, managing to finish the competition in third place.

The year seven boys faced some very talented and well-drilled teams in their recent Australian Rules Football competition. The boys showed great tenacity and courage in extremely challenging conditions, but unfortunately were unable to seal victory; finishing fourth in the competition and demonstrating many of the school values.

Finally, our year seven girls convened at the Mill Park Sports stadium during week nine for the annual Whittlesea Division Netball competition. The girls started the day with an upset win over Mill Park, followed by very competitive games against Hazel Glen, Epping and Mernda Central. Our girls displayed great sportsmanship, teamwork and were gracious in both victory and defeat.

Well done to all the students who have participated in sports this term, thanks to the parents who have come to support our teams and to the coaches who have been generous with so much of their time.
