Barnbougle 2017

The 5th SJDGA (St James Dad's Golf Association) Barnbougle event was held last weekend at Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm in Bridport, Northern Tasmania. It was held under the usual format of a three days team event of North (Blue) v South (Red) for the Gettysburg Shield and an individual pro am competition on the Friday leading into the prestigious Brown Jacket event over the weekend.

The Friday afternoon Pro Am at The Dunes saw the field contest some pretty strong wind and it was Andrew Wood who, with the help of his new big dog (driver), tamed the tough conditions and took out the warm up event. The North held a lead in the Gettysburg after day one, 5 to 3.

Day two at Lost Farm was played in near perfect conditions, beautiful clear skies and hardly a breath of wind. It was the 2016 Brown Jacket winner, Tim Webb, who showed the field a clean set of heels in recording an amazing 43 stableford points, he was followed by King Dad, Jason Storer on 40 points, Adam Ockwell and Paul Digney on 38 points and Michael Cunningham and David Fallon on 37 points. The team event was a sea of red, with the South claiming 6 of the 8 available points to take a commanding 9.5 to 6.5 lead into the Sunday. The Saturday night was highlighted by the annual Chris Dodd Calcutta, which was hilarious as always and where there was a deluge of cash for the club house leader Webby. Marcus Bailey was the self anointed replacement for John Darmody and much to everyone's mirth gave his John Darmody oration.

Back at Dunes on the Sunday, we were once again greeted with ideal golf weather, the teams event was a seesawing battle all day, with the North at stages looking like clawing back for an unlikely comeback to retain the Gettysburg Shield but ultimately the Red were too strong, held on and for the first time ever the Shield crosses North Road to reside in the South camp - the final score was 17.5 to 14.5. Congratulations to all the Southerners. Tim Webb went in with what everyone suggested was an unassailable lead in the Brown Jacket, but perhaps the weight of the Calcutta got to him and by the turn he was level pegging with Adam Ockwell who has stormed up the leader board. Close behind the two leaders, Paul Digney, Jason Storer and Michael Cunningham were nipping at their heels. However, it was Adam Ockwell who blew the field away with a barnstorming 44 points for a record total of 82 stableford points for the weekend, winning by six from Jason Storer with Michael Cunningham and Tim Webb being a further two back. Ocky also collected the nearest the pin on the 16th to cap off a very successful weekend - well done Ocky.

It was another outstanding SJDGA event, played in great spirit with a huge amount of laughs along the way - well done to all.

Cheers
