STUDENT ACTIVITIES

SOUTHERN PENINSULA BADMINTON COMPETITION

On Thursday June 6th, five year 7 girls and three boys went to Mornington Secondary College to compete in the Southern Peninsula division badminton competition. All students represented the college brilliantly by displaying excellent sportsmanship and having a red hot go. The boys only had three players that turned up so Lizzie Abeling bravely volunteered to play for the boys so we could at least enter a team.  In the girls competition our team had a fantastic day, coming first in the competition. Good luck at the next level girls which is on Wednesday August 21 at Springers Leisure Centre, 400 Cheltenham Road Keysborough. Parents are more than welcome to come along on the day.

Alan Piper (coach)

The successful girls team was:

Liz Geppert, Livy Fitzgerald, Sadie Gill, Lizzie Abeling and Iuliia Mikhailova

LIONS CLUB

Lions Club BBQ at Mt Eliza Farmer’s Market

Eighteen  of our student leaders worked tirelessly across a freezing Sunday morning cooking and serving egg and bacon rolls and sausages as a fund raiser for our sponsor child. Rikhardus, our Indonesian sponsor child is supported by our College each year and the students raised $780 to pay for our sponsorship. We will be sending our donation and a letter to be forwarded to Rikhardus early next term. A special shout out to Tyler Johnson who was a whizz on the BBQ and who worked for over 3 hours in very trying conditions. Thanks to ALL the students who gave up time on a weekend to support those less fortunate. You truly are demonstrating what it means to be a leader.

HOUSE CAPTAIN ACTIVITIES

Student netball competition and staff student netball game.  Organised by our senior house captains, a very entertaining and energetic netball competition for seniors has taken place over the last few weeks. Whilst the boys thought they had the skills to win, the girls demonstrated that knowing the rules and having some strategies really does pay off.

It was great to see students working together in teams that developed new relationships and to see them having fun and enjoying themselves in an active way at lunchtime. Well done to Holly in particular for her efforts in organising this.

Leadership breakfast and forward planning by the leaders.

Following the success at the Mount Eliza market the leaders enjoyed a bacon and egg breakfast back at school as a celebration of their hard work across the term. Teams from across the school then finalised plans for this term.

This is a snapshot of some of the things they have planned.

Bruce and Ivy have organised a local and international student table tennis competition to run over the next two weeks in the study centre at lunch. Jasper and Jacob will be running a soccer competition for Junior school students. Abbey and Xander have been working hard to organise and put in place the planning for a great race event in the city for all year 9 students in the last week of term. Remme, Liam and Freya are running a crazy sock day in the last week of term as a fund raiser for leadership and Trinity and Phoebe have planning well under way for a whole school event based around the "R U OK" health promotion. Nathan and Imogen are getting the Year 10 students organised for the new Semester with some targeted planning and Sam and Natalie have been working hard in rehearsals and supporting the Production team. Communications leaders are working with their teacher teams and supporting the change of Semester with information on our new timetables and other important information. Tom and Oli have been strategically supporting these teams as well as providing a student voice to the Principal team and ensuring they are around to help out with all events that have been run. Sustainability leaders are involved in the launch of our Resourcesmart schools program this month and Tyler in the IT team is working on the set up of an e-waste recycling centre. Belle and Bella have been running book club events and will be of great assistance to our new Librarian whilst Mrs Swannell is away.  As you can see, our students are productive, organised and full of great ideas and energy. I congratulate them on their actions so far and look forward to some new ideas and events in Semester 2.

Exemplary Performance Program

This program is one of the many in operation at the college that can go under the radar unless you are directly involved. These students, who are identified high performers, have been working across the Semester on sustainability at our College and have now had the College signed up as a Resource Smart school. Students are currently conducting audits of water, gas and electricity use, and monitoring waste management processes as well as mapping the biodiversity of trees, plants, animals and birds at the College. They also plan to look at curriculum opportunities that are provided or could be provided around sustainability. They have developed a catalogue of trees and shrubs around the school site and have used a condition report of their status to begin developing a replanting plan.

Last week ten of the EPP students conducted a presentation to parents and school counsellors about their work. They spoke authoritatively and passionately about what they have found out so far, some possible plans and their concerns for the future and for our College. They also reported back on their appreciation at being able to attend the documentary 2040 and their learning and inspiration from this. They will also present to teachers at a staff professional learning session next term and invite staff participation in their projects. It is fantastic work and a great example of empowering students to take action.

We are very proud of our Enhanced Performance Program as it does so much more than recognise capable students, and is unique to this college.

MUNA- Model United Nations Assembly

Last month Trinity Joseph and Callum Mann represented the College at the annual MUNA event held on Phillip Island. The boys spent more than 15 hours preparing their responses to a set of 5 resolutions that were to be debated at the event. They chose to represent the nation of Democratic Republic of North Korea and had to approach each of the resolutions through the lens of Kim Jong Un. The boys were diligent in their preparation and at the event were the winners of two prizes- something that has never been done before. They were awarded the MOST RESPECTED team by the other participants- a fantastic award to win as it demonstrates the calibre of these two boys and their ability to negotiate and create alliances across very diverse groups and do so in a way that won them the accolades of their peers. They also placed second in the overall best team for the weekend- again a fantastic effort. Unfortunately one of the girls who won the top prize is unable to attend the National event in Canberra so Trinity and Callum have been invited to represent Victoria along with the other student. An amazing opportunity and an excellent addition to their CV ! Rotary Mount Eliza is rightly proud of the boys and at dinner last week, gave them a cash bonus prize for their efforts. We look forward to them competing in Canberra in August.
