We braved the weather

Year 9 at Barangaroo - March 2018

Barangaroo

Students in Year 9 who are currently studying Geography this semester, travelled to Darling Harbour  and Barangaroo recently as part of their ‘Changing Places’ fieldwork.

Students have been studying the topic ‘Changing Places’ which explores the patterns and trends in population movements and the increasing urbanisation of countries. On this fieldwork excursion, students were given the opportunity to participate in fieldwork that allowed them to observe and analyse urbanisation that is occurring in Sydney. This was a great opportunity for our Year 9 Geographers to collect primary data and put into practice the geographical skills they have been learning in class out in the field.

A large thanks to the Social Sciences staff who attended and led the students by sharing their expertise in the field: Ms Sahid, Mr Collins and Ms Ha.  A special thanks to the Year 9 Adviser - Mrs Green who joined us for the day along with Mrs Alfonsi from the Learning and Support team who assisted students out in the field.

Although the weather was not on our side, and we were  slightly dampened by the rain, Year 9  remained well-behaved and proudly represented the school.

and fromTina Pham, Year 9 Geography:

Going to Barangaroo was a beneficial experience that has expanded my knowledge and understanding of the heritage they are trying to sustain while developing new infrastructure to create an urban society.

Walking around the city area was a great way to get a first-hand experience on what we have been learning about in class as physically being there places us in a position where we were about to analyse and identify different scenarios from why there are still old buildings from decades ago to how urbanisation impacts Sydney. Over all, Barangaroo gave me the opportunity to implement my vast growing knowledge into the expansion of this area.
