We choose working together

Harmony Day 2018

written by Maryam Mahmood Ahmed, Year 9

Harmony Day is a day of cultural diversity. Cecil Hills High School is all about being culturally diverse and accepting of one another which was evident throughout our entire Harmony Day event. On Wednesday 21 March our school celebrated Harmony Day and words cannot explain how extraordinary the day really was. There were endless activities the staff and students of our school had planned in order to make this day special for all of us. The initial opening to Harmony Day was the assembly we attended during period 2. The assembly started off with a wonderful speech from our Principal, Mr Sutton, which was expressed with such meaning  about his cultural experiences throughout his years of teaching; everything that led him to where he is now. Following his introductory speech, a group of amazing girls sung “We are all Australians”.  Following this was a wonderful dance group with a very meaningful choreography to the song “This is me”.  Just as we thought how much better could this get, more performances were presented, including a beautiful solo to the song Man in the Mirror, the cultural dancers, staff and students singing “What a wonderful world” and the lion dance as the great ending. All in all, the assembly was absolutely inspiring and sensational!

The best part of the day however was after lunch. There was food from different cultures up for purchase all around the school, such as Italian wood fire pizza, gelato, Turkish gozleme and many more options. Not only did we get to experience all the different foods, we also got to participate in different cultural activities and games which were organised by our teachers and held all around the school. Some of the games we had were Italian Minute to Win it, Bocce, Thong throwing, Croatian card games and many more. In the main quad music from different cultures was playing and everyone was having a blast dancing their hearts out, we learnt new dances and made new friends, we definitely loved this part the most as we got to really understand what Harmony Day was all about.

I speak on behalf of all the students at Cecil Hills High School; Thank you to our amazing teachers and students for all their hard work in organising one of the best events we have ever experienced at our school. #HarmonyDayAtCecil #Straya
