Bachelor of Engineering Practice (Honours)

Students will join a simulated engineering practice from day one, work as engineers in teams on industry projects and will be supported by engineering mentors throughout the entire course.

Swinburne introduced the Bachelor of Engineering Practice (Honours) degree in 2018.  This course offers an alternative to the traditional teaching and assessment approaches in engineering.  For four years, students undertake real-world projects in collaborative teams, working as Associates with the Swinburne Engineering Practice Academy – an on-campus engineering consultancy. In a departure from traditional lecture- and tutorial-style learning, Associates learn by doing with the support of online learning modules. Immersed in a professional practice environment, Associates quickly develop the mind-sets required for professional success – agility, accountability, confidence and resilience – leading to strong employment outcomes.

It has been co-designed with multiple industry partners to ensure that future graduates will be well-prepared to go into an existing company or create their own.  Entry to the degree is based on submission of a written submission and an interview, rather than ATAR results, and assessment is based on individual performance in each project and progress towards self-defined learning goals, rather than on exams.  The degree runs alongside the existing Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), and conforms to the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Australia and students graduate as engineers.

Students should note that the VCE prerequisite subjects are:

  • VCE Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 25 in any English or 30 in English as Alternate Language (EAL) or equivalent
  • VCE Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 20 in any Mathematics

What is a Barrister?

A barrister is a lawyer with specialist skills in representing clients in court or in a negotiation and advising on court processes.  Many barristers are specialists in particular areas of law, such as criminal law, corporations’ law, property law or personal injury.

Any lawyer can become a barrister.  Becoming a barrister is about your skills and abilities, not what school you went to or what ATAR you got.  The Bar has diverse membership from many ethnic backgrounds.  You can come to the Bar at any age – the youngest barristers are in their 20s and the oldest are in their 80s.  The Bar is short for the Victorian Bar which is the professional association representing over 2000 barristers in Victoria.

So, how are barristers and solicitors different?  Barristers and solicitors are types of lawyers. Solicitors are generally the first lawyer that a client will see to explain their legal problem.  Not all legal issues end up in court – for example, drafting a contract or a Will, or looking after buying and selling a house – so not all legal issues require the expertise of a barrister.

Difference between Electrical and Mechanical Engineering?

Students often ask what the difference is between electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.  There are many explanations regarding the difference and the summaries below should provide some clarification.

Actually, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering are near polar opposites in the engineering world. Mechanical Engineering is based on the mechanics field of physics, while Electrical Engineering is based on the electricity and magnetism field of physics. I have made things quite simple here. If you love solving problems in mechanics’ portion of physics, then definitely mechanical engineering is for you and if you feel attraction in solving problems in electricity and magnetism then electrical engineering can be a right choice for you. (Vikash Gait)

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineers plan, design and oversee the development, installation, operation, and maintenance of machinery. They conduct research to solve practical engineering problems and improve efficiency.  (Good Universities Guide - Mechanical Engineer).

In fact, it has to do with the design of any mechanical system and the assembly of different mechanisms to form a machine.  This can be combined with other elements, such as the study and effect of heat in motion (Thermodynamics), the flow and application of compressible and incompressible fluid (Fluid Mechanism), mechanical design and computer/electronics engineering with the application of automatic control. (Mechatronics) etc.

Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineers design, develop and supervise the manufacture, installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical systems. They work on systems for the generation, distribution, utilisation, and control of electric power. They also work on electronic systems used for computing, communications, and other industrial applications. (Good Universities Guide - Electrical Engineer)

Electrical Engineering involves the design and study of electronics, power, and electrical systems.  Electrical Engineering deals with the problems associated with large-scale electrical systems such as power transmission and motor control.  So, Electrical Engineers are usually concerned with using electricity to transmit energy.

So, a simple analogy: being a mechanical engineer you will learn to build a car’s body and engine, while being an electrical engineer you will be able to handle/build/manage the car's battery.  (Vikash Gait)

To consider this career, it is helpful if you –

  • Have good listening and interpersonal skills
  • Enjoy language and communication
  • Are able to inspire confidence and cooperation
  • Enjoy working with people

Graduates are eligible for membership of Speech Pathology Australia. Most employers require applicants for speech pathology positions to demonstrate that they are eligible for current practicing membership. For some employers, this is a mandatory requirement.

Speech Pathologists work in public hospitals, rehabilitation centres, community and mental health services, school’s kindergartens and specialist organisations providing services for people with a disability. Speech Pathologists may also work in private practice and some are involved in teaching and research.

What does a Clinical Perfusionist do?

The Australian and New Zealand College of Perfusionists (ANZCP) website states that Perfusionists operate the heart-lung bypass machine generally during heart surgery to maintain safe and stable patient circulation while the heart is stopped for surgical repair.  The patient is said to be on cardiopulmonary bypass.  Perfusionists may operate such equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or temporarily substitute for the patient’s heart and lung function.

So, this machine takes over the work of the heart in replacing carbon dioxide with oxygen and pumping the oxygenated blood around the body; it also replaces the lungs in controlling the patient’s breathing.  Once the machine is set and the blood is passing through, the Perfusionist controls the equipment as it takes over the work of the patient’s heart, monitoring oxygen levels in their blood and the patient’s breathing.

Perfusionists work in operating theatres in public and private hospitals.  Their main work is performed within a cardiac operating theatre, but they also work in Intensive Care Units, General, Orthopaedic, Vascular and Neurosurgical Operating theatres, Cardiac Catheter Laboratories and Research Laboratories.  Importantly, Perfusionists need to be good communicators and team workers who are able to stay calm under pressure.

In order to practise, Perfusionists must meet the following entry requirements –

  • complete a Bachelor Degree in Science - with major studies in biology, chemistry, anatomy or physiology

then study further to obtain specialised training in perfusion theory and practice through the ANZCP and pass an examination.
