Welcome back to Sport for Term 3. This term the College will field three Secondary basketball teams, four Primary basketball teams, a Year 9/10 Football team, a Year 7/8 and two Primary Hockey teams, and a Year 9 Badminton team. Good luck to everyone representing the College in sport this term.
JSSATIS Cross Country - Thursday 1 July
Late last term, the Primary Cross Country Team competed in the rescheduled JSSATIS Carnival with the other Southern Independent Colleges, at the Rokeby Police Academy. Thankfully the weather was beautiful and confirmed the decision to postpone the event. The JSSATIS course is slightly different to the STCPSSA one, presenting a similar, but varied challenge. Again, there was wonderful spirit, and it was great to be able to have spectators come and cheer on all competitors.
Well done to all the participants, and special mention to these students from Year 5 for their outstanding results:
Ribbons:
1st Place: Madeline Marshall – Year 5
2nd Place: Riley Bain – Year 5
Top 10 Finishers:
7th Place: Grace Kinder – Year 5
8th Place: Elka Kuylaars - Year 5
Water Polo
This year Mount Carmel was represented by two Water Polo teams in the WPTAS Schools competition, where we saw great improvement over the 10 rounds.
Although not having enough players to fill a Year 7/8 team as well as a Year 9/10 team, we opted to have a secondary team that competed in the Year 9/10 competition. This meant that the Year 7 players, some whom had never played Water Polo before, had to step up to compete against older players. This required dedication and commitment to the sport, and it was pleasing to see a significant amount of improvement over the competition. This was exemplified with the last game, versing St Mary’s, the very first team we played, giving us a chance to showcase our improvement. In the first round, we lost 9-12 and on our last game, we won 12-7. The team did very well, with our State team members Maya Chapman and Charlotte Webb aiding our team effectively, encouraging up and coming star Millie Halliwell to go for goals, and our defence team to consistently put up a strong fight against the opposition.
The Primary team, coached by Zoe Fava and Year 9 student, Lita White, were a whole new team that, due to the cancellation of the season last year, so no one had played before. Soon however, they found their stride, winning their third game against Hutchins/Collegiate. They continued to improve and most importantly have fun throughout the season, with Cleo White finding her favourite position as goalie, and Elka Kuylaars being the greatest goal scorer of the team.
Thank you to all the girls who participated, and we hope to see you back next year.
Special thanks to our wonderful coaches and managers, and to all the families for helping out teams with scoring, transporting and supporting.
Year 9/10 Coaches Mikayla Cooper and Elly Muller
Primary Netball
The JSSATIS Primary Netball competition concluded at the end of last term. The College was represented well with 32 students taking to the court, across four teams.
The students did a great job, taking turns in various positions and improving in the basic skills of netball. The more experienced players have been patient and helpful to team mates playing netball for the first time.
The roster has also provided a wonderful opportunity for some of our Year 7s to help out and pass on some of their knowledge and skills to the younger students. Thanks to Lucy Allen and Sophie Aylett who coached and umpired the Year 4s, and Millie Halliwell for umpiring Year 5/6.
We also had a wonderful group of adult helpers; either umpiring, coaching or managing teams. Special thanks to Angela French, Joanne Banks-Smith, Yvonne Onn, Bec O’Halloran, Rebecca Lancaster and Lisa Cranefield.
Tasmania Devils AFL Representatives
Congratulations to Year 9 students Maya Lamprill, Meg Harrison and Shelby Leonard, who have been invited into the Tasmania Devils AFL under-17 girls talent program. A wonderful achievement and opportunity.
Basketball Representatives
Congratulations to Year 9 students, Claire Murray and Coco Erin who were selected to represent Tasmania at the Australian U16 Basketball Championships, which was to be held in Perth, WA during the holidays. Unfortunately, the carnival is currently postponed, but we hope the opportunity is available again later in the year.
