From the Rector

Greetings!
From last Wednesday it was great to welcome back our students, teachers, and staff to the College. I certainly missed the spirit, noise, and life that all community members bring to the College whilst I was working here during the lockdown.
This picture of the quadrangle, which is usually buzzing with students, highlights the quietness of the College during lockdown.
On Thursday, July 29th, Fr Kevin Davine OMI celebrated the 62nd anniversary of his priestly ordination. He was ordained by Bishop Patrick Lyons at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sale on 29 July 1959. Fr Kevin has a long and distinguished ministry in education having served as Rector in all three Oblate Colleges, Mazenod WA, Mazenod Vic (2) and Iona College Queensland. The Oblate and Mazenod College communities congratulate Fr Kevin and continue to enjoy his presence around the College.
Be kind to Fr Kevin as he is a little fragile with Melbourne’s performances now.
Whilst in lockdown I have enjoyed (?) some extra time to go for a daily walk around Mulgrave. As I walk, it is rather disappointing to see the increase in litter strewn around the streets, especially face masks and take–away coffee cups. Our students are focusing on sustainability and how we should care for our environment. To discard these items rather than placing them in a bin or taking them home to be disposed of correctly, is not respecting the environment that God has entrusted to us.
The readings this weekend reflect what we often feel: “Prove to us that you are God! Do something to show your presence in a way that convinces us. Don’t hide yourself from us.” In the Gospel people are looking for Jesus. People want to follow Jesus. What they really want is not so much what Jesus is saying, but what Jesus can give them in this life. Jesus reminds them that although He can give them bread in this life, what they really should want is life eternal. We know that eventually, the people reject Jesus because they want miracles and food and power in this life—not the hard work of fulfilling the word of God, seeking the will of God and sacrificing themselves for the good of others. What do we want? Are we willing to be formed by Jesus through his Holy Scriptures and the sacraments?
Once again, I invite you to participate in the Annual De Mazenod Family National Gathering on Saturday 7 August 2021, 12:00pm-3:00pm. Unfortunately, due to the unpredictability of the current COVID restrictions, this event has been moved to a fully online event. This Gathering is open to anyone associated with any of the ministries of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. To participate in this event please register on the following link: https://bit.ly/DMFgathering2021
Wouldn’t it be sensational if the highest attendance from the Province came from Mazenod Victoria? Any further questions, please email ehoad@oblates.com.au.
This week I commence the new series entitled, ‘The Spirit, Mission, and Vision of Bishop Eugene de Mazenod are Planted in Australia.’ This series doesn’t cover all the ministries of the Australian Province since the Oblates arrived. I will be concentrating on the ministries where we currently serve to give you an insight into the structure of our Australian Province. Enjoy this series?
Have a Smile!
COVID TIME!! Better to stay safe at home!!
Stay safe, stay healthy, and keep connected with God and one another!
Yours in Jesus Christ and Mary Immaculate,
Fr Harry Dyer OMI
