Year 10 Sport Science Rockclimbing Excursion

As a part of Ms Coffa’s sports science class, we went rock climbing at Clip ‘n Climb. As we are studying the movements of our joints, the skeletal system and the muscular system, this excursion was very worthwhile. It was a great opportunity to observe what we have been learning in action. One of the main highlights was climbing the wall where we could time ourselves and compete with each other. Out of the nine of us, Marlon completed the challenge the fastest with a record of 22.6 seconds. Tanish came close with just 0.8 seconds under Marlon’s score. Overall, we spent around an hour thoroughly enjoying our time climbing, challenging ourselves and learning along the way.

VCE PE Goalball

On July 13, the Unit 1/2 PE class were lucky enough to be visited by Daniel and Rob from ExSight Sports. ExSight Sports is an organisation which raises awareness for the visually impaired sporting community by delivering a range of sport experiences to schools. Daniel and Rob presented a game none of the class had heard of before, Goalball. This game is primarily played by the completely or partially blind community and involves a ball being hurled from one side of the court to the other in order to put it past the opposing team. All participants are to wear blacked out blindfolds so they cannot see, and a bell is placed within the ball to coordinate the players. The main challenge of playing this sport was to rely on only your hearing to coordinate yourself and having to communicate thoroughly with your teammates so you can all work together as a team. Overall, this incursion was an incredible experience for the whole class and provided us with much better understanding of the difficulties the blind community faces each day. On behalf of the entire Unit 1/2 PE class, we would like to thank Daniel, Rob and ExSight Sports for this opportunity.

For many of us, eyesight is a vital part of playing sports. It allows us to return a tennis serve, kick a soccer ball and run across uneven surfaces. However, Goalball, a sport designed for and played by blind and vision-impaired people, involves achieving perception of the court through one's auditory and tactile senses rather than through sight. This requires trust - not only confidence in your own skills and coordination but also assurance in the mutual kindness and competence of your classmates. Regardless of vision, letting go of explicitly controlling an outcome and allowing others to direct your movements requires effort and trust. For all of us, life involves a constant balance of letting go and holding onto control.
