Whole School Health Units - Consent
During weeks 6 & 7 students in all grades will be engaging in age appropriate health units focusing on ‘Consent’ with their classroom teacher . The teaching of consent in all Victorian government schools is mandatory. Four one hour lessons have been developed using the Education Department resources of ‘Consent Education Guidance’ and ‘Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships’. Throughout these lessons students will be involved in a range of activities including defining term, class discussion, games, role plays, analysing scenarios and learning ways of seeking help.
Outlined below are the learning intentions for each grade to provide a clearing understanding of student learning:
Foundation
- We are learning how to keep our body safe
- We are learning who are the people that we can go to when we need help
- We are learning the difference between friendly/fair and mean/too rough/violence
PLC 1&2
- We are learning about fair play
- We are learning gender friendly behaviours
- We are learning ways to respect my body and space
- We are learning the different between respect and violence
- We are learning to identify people from whom we can seek help
PLC 3&4
- We are learning about different forms of gender-based violence, including physical, verbal and psychological
- We will examine the effects of gender-based violence on targets, witnesses and perpetrators
- We are learning about what respectful, gender inclusive behaviours look like.
- We are learning to assess conflict situations to consider possible responses (safely end, intervene or withdraw)
- We are learning to describe and practice help-seeking skills and strategies that can be used when encountering uncomfortable or unsafe situations involving peers or adults
PLC 5&6
- We are learning to identify different example of gender-based violence, including physical, verbal, psychological and sexual, and the ways in which these types of violence can play out in face-to-face and digital environments
- We will explore the relationship between negative gender norms and acceptance of gender-based violence
- We will identify and practice behaviours that demonstrate respect and recognition of the rights of others within interpersonal relationships
- We will learn protective and assertive behaviours that can be used to maintain safety or dignity in situations involving gender based violence
- We will learn proactive peer support and help seeking strategies that can be used in response to instances of gender-based violence.
