From The Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and Carers,

The term is moving along and our students have settled back into the routine of learning.  We are lucky that our students are able to learn on site and we are certainly taking this opportunity to maximise everyday for learning and student growth.

Although we are in an environment that is very challenging, it is important our students attend school if they are fit and well.  We thank our parents for following COVID-19 protocols of keeping their children at home with symptoms such as a cough, runny nose or sore throat.

Last Wednesday when our students returned all teachers focused their starting time welcoming the students back and reminding students of respectful behaviour and what our attendance competition is.  We have also explained this in a very creative video.

Assembly

Next week will be the half way point of the term and will also be out Week 5 assembly.  We be conducting a virtual assembly with all students viewing it from their classroom.  Parents and carers will be able to view this via a live stream.

The school disco has moved to the second last day of the term.

School Café

We have a school Café that will be open to the public as of next week.  It is open every morning from 8.15am to 9am and is serving hot drinks. It is barista style coffee and hot chocolates on offer at $4.00.  You will find the Café attached to the stadium near the new  playground.  If you are after a coffee on the run then this is the place to go.  You can also purchase coffee cards to save the mucking around from the front office.

School upgrades

At school council recently we discussed some of the focus areas for school facility upgrades.  One of the areas we are investigating is the idea purchasing a school portable so that Library can be located in its own space.  We will continue to see if this is area we would like to invest in.  By doing so we are able to maintain low classes sizes, a specialist kitchen centre and specialist areas for Chinese and Digitech.  We do have to remind ourselves that our school is very blessed with the facilities we have, it doesn't prevent us from striving for more or better.

Last week we began the upgrades to the bike shed.  We encourage our students to ride to school as much as they possibly can.

DASH on the move

Our afterschool care program DASH is nearly ready to move across to the STADIUM.   We anticipate that DASH may commence next week from this location.  Be aware of this possible move.

Reading Club

Unfortunately, we have noticed an increase in the number of students who are attending Reading Club each day, because they haven’t read at home or had their diary signed. You can see in the below picture, the positive impact that reading for 20 minutes at home each day has on a child’s literacy ability and exposure to vocabulary. Although we don’t send homework home at Delacombe, it is an expectation that students will read for 20 minutes a night, record what they have read in their school diary and have it signed by a parent. Students in Grades 3-6 who can read independently, have the option to complete the diary themselves.

Thank you and have a

good week..
