New Campus Update

Name the Tower Crane winner announced - 'Albert'

To celebrate the arrival of the tower crane at our new campus on Molesworth Street – our students were invited to take part in a name the crane competition. We thank all students who submitted an entry to the competition.

We would like to congratulate Leo F in Year 1D who submitted the winning name of the crane competition. Leo put forward the name ‘Albert’ because ‘Albert Mattingley was the founder and first teacher at North Melbourne Primary School’ (NMPS). Leo also told us that Albert is ‘the name of the great scientist, Albert Einstein’.

We selected the name as it draws on the rich history of NMPS, and we think it’s a great fit as we move forward with the new campus development.

Leo and his family are invited to attend the ‘Name the Crane’ ceremony next week.

Five cool tower crane facts

There are different types of cranes

We are using a tall tower crane to help us build our six-storey vertical campus.

The tower crane signals an exciting new chapter in our building program

It marks the end of our foundation work. That’s things like digging and removing excess soil (excavation), to make way for the buildings. It also means we are about to start building the campus structure – the parts you will soon see above ground.

Tower cranes do the heavy lifting

Our crane will move heavy materials safely around the building site. That’s things like steel; large tools and equipment; and reinforcement (concrete mixed with other material to make it super strong); and formwork like wooden structures and moulds that we pour concrete into).

The tower crane will put concrete walls in place

Large concrete panels are made in a factory, then delivered to our campus site. You will see the crane lifting the panels and putting them into place to create walls. The process is similar to making things from Lego.

Tower cranes have many moves

They can move up and down and side to side. Our builders call this ‘feeding the structure.’ Soon after we put the crane in place, you will see the campus building works start to rise above the concrete slab on ground level. We call this stage, out of the ground and the start of suspended structure work.

It’s amazing to think, that 12 months from now, the campus will be near completion, scheduled to open in Term 1, 2023.
