8-10 Woodwork Elective

As part of our woodwork elective we had to make three different sized chopping boards, large, medium and small. The steps involved were:

1. Measure and cut the boards to size - Large 28.5cm x 53.5cm; Medium 28.5cm x 28cm and Small 28.5cm x 23.5cm.

2. Use the sander to smooth the boards.

3. Stain the chopping boards with food oil.

4. Made stands to hold the boards. I made the stands out of some scrap wood.

5. I used a chisel and a saw to cut out shapes for the boards to stand in.

6. I used a burning tool to put my initials on the boards.

Calf Leading Day

On Friday the 19th November several students participated in an Agricultural Education day in conjunction with the Apsley Primary School.

We had two guest speakers being Tony Kealy from Curlew Merinos and Andrew Rainsford from Apsley. Tony told us about their breeding program at Curlew merinos and what they are hoping to achieve with their flock of sheep. We got to feel some fleeces and look at the what makes a top fleece of wool. Mr Rainsford showed us his Braunvieh cattle and helped us to learn about what to look for when judging cattle and selecting for breeding.

Our day culminated in the showing of calves down on the front oval. (Quite a funny sight watching calves, students and a baby lamb walking through the school yard.) The calves were all very well behaved and we won several ribbons for different categories on the day.

A big thank you to Alana Ryan for helping us train and prepare the calves for the day.

We have to thank Mrs Robyne Rainsford, Andrew and Alice Rainsford, and The Edenhope P and A society for making this day happen and to be such a successful day. We really appreciated the chance to compete and learn some new skills in lieu of not being able to attend the actual Edenhope Show.
