From the 5/6 Classroom

TEAM 5/6 MATHS

Last week in maths, the Grade 5/6 cohort learnt how to use tessellations and Cartesian planes. Students were split into groups and were given different activities to understand how to create tessellations, such as understanding how many sides and angles are in a shape and finding patterns in which shapes can tessellate with themselves. Through our investigation we found that if the interior angle of a shape is a factor of the number 360, it can tessellate. We were then given the choice between a online tool and paper to create some tessellations of our own.

Later that same week, we learnt how to use Cartesian planes, more commonly known as coordinates. We started off by understanding the different quadrants of a Coordinate plane, and then moved on to plotting points on a graph. We were able to draw images by following instructions and coordinates given to us. After this, we did more work on using ways to change a shape, such as translation, reflection and rotation. The Grade 5's also looked at enlarging images.
