From the 1/2 classrooms

This term the Grade 1 and 2 students have been learning all about multiplication! Students have been learning about the concept of multiplication as being the total, or product, of groups of equal size. While multiplying is represented by the ‘x’ symbol, it can also refer to as equal groups, lots of, groups of, and times by.

Students have investigated the different strategies we can use to solve multiplication problems, and drawn upon previous learning such as skip counting and addition. Students have explored Commutative Property, the notion that when we multiply two numbers, the order doesn’t change the product. Being one of the four main operations, this understanding of multiplication is an important foundation which student’s will continue to build upon.

Please enjoy looking at the following examples of the strategies students have practised and some of the learning activities they have completed.

EQUAL GROUPS:

Multiplication problems can be solved by creating a visual representations of the number sentences using equal groups.

2FB: Alex, Jonathan, Claudia

NUMBERLINE:

Representing multiplication on a number line can be done by taking equal jumps from zero and using skip counting.

Zayne (2FB), Wilson (12C)

REPEATED ADDITION:

Multiplication can be represented by adding the equal groups, which allows students to solve problems using their understanding of addition.

Joshua (2FB), Sia (12C)

ARRAYS:

An array is another visual representation of multiplication that arranges dots, objects, numbers or pictures in equal columns or rows. The purpose of an array is to help student’s understand multiplication and will link this understanding division.
