Active Travel

All set for active travel.

It is fantastic that over the next few weeks, everyone will be returning to school. As many families have been active during lockdown, it is the perfect time to think about keeping those good habits going.

A way to do this is to keep skating, riding, walking and scooting to school!

Two important steps to help this happen are -

  1. Help your child become familiar with the local streets around the school and identify the safest route to school. Make sure this includes the location of safe road crossings.
  2. Build your child's confidence gradually. Start by joining them on their trip to school, then walk or ride part of the way with them and let them go the last couple of blocks on their own.

In addition to keeping good, healthy active habits going by riding, scooting, skating and walking to school, other benefits include -

  • reducing traffic congestion around the school, leading to quieter and safer streets for everyone,
  • increasing the independence and confidence in children,
  • improving road and personal safety skills, and
  • general health and wellbeing.

I look forward to seeing everyone back at school over the next few weeks and in the meantime, stay safe and stay active.
