News from the University of Melbourne: Understanding the Undergraduate Journey
Flexible yet focused, Melbourne's 3-year undergraduate degrees equip students to solve the problems of the future. Whether they already have their career path mapped out, or are open to new possibilities, students can tailor their studies to suit their interests and goals.
First year
Your first year is your chance to explore, whether it's your chosen path, or a brand new one. Alongside compulsory subjects, you can choose from a wide variety of disciplines. You can even study overseas in your first winter break.
Second year
In second year, you'll focus by choosing your major, if you haven't already, and can also choose to follow a 'breadth track'. That's how an Arts student can qualify for the Doctor of Medicine, or a Commerce student can become an engineer.
Third year
By third year, you'll achieve a high level of specialisation in your chosen major. You'll be ready to take part in a ‘capstone’ experience, aimed at consolidating your learning and preparing you for your career.
Studying a Concurrent Diploma at Melbourne
The University of Melbourne does not offer double degrees, but it does offer a small selection of concurrent diplomas allowing students to study an extra qualification alongside their degree. This can enhance their employability and allow them to develop detailed knowledge in an area outside of their main area of study. The concurrent diplomas on offer are:
- Diploma in Computing
- Diploma in Languages
- Diploma in Mathematical Sciences
- Diploma in Music (Practical)
Diploma in General Studies (DiGS)
The Diploma in General Studies (DiGS) gives students a sample of various University of Melbourne degrees and provides a pathway to further tertiary study. Open to domestic students, this one-year course provides students with the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects from Science, Commerce, Design and Agriculture - providing some students with guaranteed entry into a University of Melbourne degree based on their weighted average mark. DiGS provides a pathway to one of the following University of Melbourne bachelor’s degrees:
- Bachelor of Agriculture
- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Biomedicine
- Bachelor of Commerce
- Bachelor of Design
- Bachelor of Science.

News from William Angliss
Important update of what to expect when students preference any of William Angliss Institutes courses in VTAC.
Vocational courses: Certificate & Diplomas
Should the student preference an Angliss VET course, they will need to complete a Pre-training review form (PTR), LLN Test and Upload their highest VET preference. If a student re-orders their preferences, and their PTR no longer matches their highest preference, they can email admissions@angliss.edu.au to update their PTR form. (Simply include their name, VTAC ID and new highest preference).
Degrees:
Students are requested to send a copy of their resume to applications@angliss.edu.au
We will be communicating these requirements to students from Monday, 13th of September.
If students do not complete these steps by the 6th of December, they will be unlikely to receive an offer in the first round.
The future student team and I are here to assist you and your students at any time by booking in a one on one zoom chat.
Students applying for nursing/midwifery courses
Year 12 students applying for nursing or midwifery should be mindful of the following entry requirements:
- VTAC: Applicants applying for nursing or midwifery courses via the Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre (VTAC) will need to complete the ‘Nursing and Midwifery Declaration Form’ within their VTAC account.
- Victoria University: Bachelor of Nursing applicants will need to register for and sit the CASPer test. Note – applicants who are also applying for Initial Teacher Education courses will need to pay and sit for two separate CASPer tests, https://takealtus.com/casper/
- UAC: Applicants applying for nursing or midwifery courses via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) will need to complete an ‘English Proficiency Declaration’ within their UAC account.
Considering Teaching – Don’t forget to check entry requirements
If you are planning on applying for an undergraduate education degree in the future, you will need to be aware of selection criteria for each state.
Victorian courses
- Achieve a minimum ATAR of 70: Some universities will require a higher ATAR. You may be able to access entry into courses with a lower ATAR if you are eligible for ATAR adjustment factors.
- Complete the CASPer test: this is an online video-based situational judgment test. The test is designed to measure ethics, empathy and communication (selected universities will require this), https://takealtus.com/casper/ (aim to do some by 14 November to be eligible for December round offers)
- Achieve prerequisites: meet the requirements for prerequisite subjects.
There are also some alternative options for students considering teaching:
- Pathways Course, which in some cases doesn’t take any longer, just seeks to see if you are adequately prepared with the skills and knowledge, so provides a more supported first year course which can lead to a direct transfer into your preferred teaching program (See Dip TEP below).
- Complete an undergraduate course in an area of interest and then look to complete a graduate entry teaching program (GET).
- Government supported alternative programs like the High Achieving Teachers Program offered by Teach for Australia and Latrobe University
The Diploma of Teacher Education Preparation may be the right study choice for students with the motivation, capability and personal attributes to be a great teacher.
The Diploma of Teacher Education Preparation (Dip TEP) is an accredited qualification aimed at students who do not initially meet the minimum ATAR for teaching. The course has been developed as part of the Victorian Government’s Excellence in Teacher Education Reforms to ensure that disadvantage and diverse educational experiences are not a barrier to capable and committed people who want to pursue a career in teaching.
Successful completion of the Dip TEP will ensure that students graduate with the prerequisite knowledge and skills to undertake a rigorous undergraduate teacher education course. The Dip TEP supports students to meet the literacy and numeracy standards they will need in order to graduate with a teaching qualification and supports them to meet the demands of study at a higher education level.
The course introduces them to contemporary issues in education and to teaching as a profession, including practical school-based placement.
The course is offered by a number of institutions, including ACU, RMIT, Swinburne, and VU Polytechnic.
