MIKE (Grumpy) TAYLOR TROPHY
Most Improved Senior Female Player
By Sam Arch and Penny Senior
This person wears the Number 1 shirt in the following year. Grumpy was a WA senior representative as a Goal Keeper pre -world War 2 and later joined East Malvern HC. He coached junior teams and was a great mentor to juniors throughout his time at East Malvern, and later TEM HC. The juniors, out of respect, were allowed to call him "Grumpy" as opposed to Mr Taylor. It is Mike Taylor's old East Malvern shirt which hangs in the clubrooms today.
Eliza’s development as a hockey player, not just this year but in the past few years, comes as no surprise to myself and everyone who has had the privilege of playing with her.
As well being as an absolute pleasure to coach, Eliza’s professionalism and desire to learn and improve herself is truly inspiring.
Coming up through the grades in seniors hockey, only a few short years ago, Eliza was a star player in metro/pennant teams, and in 2021 she has well and truly established herself as a stalwart in goals for the Premier League Reserves team this year as a 17 year old.
A true highlight was watching her dominate in the goals in the Pennant A semi final in 2019, calm and confident during the shootout and the ear to ear smile on her face when she took her helmet off after saving the winning goal.
A true shot-stopper, Eliza’s agility and positional sense in goals, as well as her knack for stepping up in the big moments, allowed her to have a great impact on the Reserves’ season, making numerous saves to shut out the opposition and allow us to wrestle back control of games. She has a great ability to communicate and guide players, give direction and understand game play.
Watching her confidence grow, it has been great to see her ability and influence in the changing room develop.
Eliza is a more than worthy recipient of the Mike “Grumpy” Taylor Perpetual Trophy for the Most Improved Female player in 202,1 and we all look forward to watching her continue to improve, as her attitude both on and off the field will be a great asset in realising her doubtless potential.
Congratulations Eliza!!!!
