MENS VP SPEECH

There are times when it’s appropriate to be humble when considering your achievements. This is not one of those times: Premier League had their highest ever finish, Pennant B promoted, Pennant C promoted, Pennant F promoted, and Pennant G promoted.
If a someone hadn’t snuck out of a hotel a few months ago we’d probably be sitting under a rope with so many flags on it a causal passerby would think we made bunting. Alas, our teams didn’t get our day in the sun but that shouldn’t detract from the fact that this season has been an unequivocal success.
Much of our success should be placed against the incredible work a lot of people have done behind the scenes to ensure that we’re at our best every game. I want to particularly mention our fantastic coaching team, notably Cam Belza, Greg Koster and Matt Hooper who will be stepping back from behind the clipboard. We should also acknowledge the time and effort that unseen people have contributed this year. Sam, Michael, Pip and Bruce have put in some serious time to make sure that things have run smoothly for us. I’d also like to thank all of you that contributed some of your time to help other areas of the club, whether its umpiring a game, helping with juniors or manning the BBQ. We genuinely can’t operate without the generosity of our members.
All our players should also congratulate themselves too during this “pandemic” era, many clubs have shrunk as enthusiasm waned. We bucked that trend and grew, which is a testament to the environment and culture we have across our grades. It’s also fantastic to see so many young lads join the senior grades, you only need to count how many homegrown players we have in our top squad to see how promising this is for the longevity of the club.
Aside from the best and fairest awards that have been handed out already, there are some other honorable mentions that I’d like to throw out. Firstly Matt Mullins, Steve Macumber, Kobe Dudley and Evan Douglas were this season’s top scorers. Secondly, Pennant C takes the award for the most impenetrable defense and Reserves had the most lethal attack. Finally, we should also get around Ola Marshal and Adam Luck for the making the HC Melbourne Teams – a massive achievement for both of them.
I hope to see you all next season, we have some exciting plans in store (including an eighth team) when you get back.
