Butch MacPhie Perpetual Trophy - Contribution to GoalkeepingAwarded to a person that has been significantly involved with goalkeeping or a person who has displayed excellence in goalkeeping .Butch started playing hockey at East Malvern HC as a youngster. When TEM was formed in 1971 Butch was the goalkeeper in the firsts premiership team that year. He was president in the 1987 SL1 premiership year. Butch coached Juniors through to veterans, and represented Australia at veterans level as a goalkeeper.
No matter which section of TEM you are affiliated with, you are bound to know the name Will Karaffa. Since arriving at the club 5 years ago, Will has contributed enormously to the Mens, Women's, and Junior Sections at TEM. Including countless hours working with all our developing junior keepers, as well as many of our top-level senior goalkeepers during the week, all the while keeping his own performances during training and games at the highest level.
In 2021, Will has been part of some stellar performances with the ever-successful Mens Premier League Reserves team, featuring some particularly impressive last-second stick saves and tackles to save the day. On top of this, he has volunteered much of his free time to coach many of the women’s goalies on a Tuesday night prior to his own training and junior goalies from U12s through to U18s on a Thursday night. The time and dedication that has been devoted to helping these goalkeepers develop should not be understated, with each individual player showing continuous improvement from these sessions. Having spoken to many of these keepers, young and more experienced, your efforts could not be more appreciated.
From all of us at TEM, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Will, for your time, dedication, and sacrifice to all sections of this club.
