From the Boarding Captains

As everyone has settled back into boarding from their well-deserved long weekend break at home with their friends or family the weather has most certainly changed down here in Albany. About two weeks ago, almost overnight, the weather went from sunny and nice to being quite miserable, raining and cold! Winter is most certainly upon us.

Across all the boarding houses lots of students of all year groups are in and out of their houses daily to winter sport commitments such as hockey, football, netball, volleyball, and soccer. These commitments are not only in the afternoon and evening but also early in the morning before the school day starts.

In Week Ten of this term, GSG is attending the annual Country Week event up in Perth. With the event going ahead last year unlike the few years before thanks to COVID, there are lots of people excited to go back again and others that are looking forward to experiencing it for the first of (hopefully) many times.

I hope everyone enjoys Friday's assembly celebrating 25 years of the school being founded and has an enjoyable rest of Term Two.

This term is really flying by with the start-up of winter sports and the first set of exams for Years Ten to Twelve.

I trust everyone enjoyed the recent long weekend, but our Year Twelves especially made the most of the relaxing break after a busy week of exams.

I am continuing to catch up with the Endeavour students each Tuesday night for tutoring, and although sometimes it's not all school related, I enjoy chatting away and hearing what's happening in the younger years. Even though seniors have weeks filled with other sport and cocurricular commitments, I strongly encourage making the short walk down to Endeavour or Anchorage on Tuesday night to show a friendly face and share a friendly chat. This small gesture of your commitment to growing connections and friendships with younger peers is really valuable in creating a strong and supportive community.

With our new dinner schedule with Juniors and Seniors combined in the Dining Hall, having friendships with students in other houses and ages creates a friendly and approachable atmosphere. These combined dinners act as a chance for Seniors to give peer support and role model the charitable traits of a GSG boarder, and I hope we can embrace our positions as the older students to create an enjoyable and kind scene in the new dinner system.

As said at the Foundation Day assembly this morning, boarding has had a strong history as a part of the school community and has developed continuously to support those in our community. I look forward to the development of our space and everything else that is in store for the future of GSG Boarding. Maybe on the 50th Anniversary of GSG, Darcy and I will come visit and see how far the community has come since now.
