3/4 B

Week 5 Term 2

Week 5! We're already at the half way point of term 2. It's been a busy couple of weeks. Firstly I'd like to say congratulations to all students in year 3-6 who last week participated in the Bayside District Cross Country at Woodleigh Senior Campus. It was true Cross Country weather last Friday, overcast, drizzly and cold!

Maths

Last week in Maths we were estimating different lengths both inside and outside the classroom. Children also used both informal and formal units of measurement to calculate the lengths of different objects. They used scaled instruments such as trundle wheels, rulers and tape measures to measure different objects.

Literacy

Did you know? It takes 27.3 days for the Moon to travel all the way around the Earth or that The Moon is getting further away from the earth!?

This term we have been applying our writing skills to informative writing. We have been collecting facts and information about the moon and completing an information report. We are learning that some of our key narrative strategies such as sizzling starts, banning the boring and show, don't tell can be applied to informative writing too. This will lead into collecting facts and information about well known explorers for our Inquiry unit Into the Unknown.

Inquiry

This week we began our research project on a well known explorer. Students will learn about the people who shaped our interconnected world as they research the life and legacy of an explorer from the Age of Exploration. Students will create a timeline of the explorers important journeys and sequence events of one particular voyage. They will also plot a voyage undertaken by the explorer using a world map. Towards the end of the project they will present their information in an interesting way and ask the class to complete a quiz based on their explorer.

Education in Faith

Today the candidates for First Holy Communion participated in a labyrinth experience in the Red Centre as they continue their preparations for the Sacrament on Sunday June 18th. Tonight, they and their families will attend a family night here at the school. It promises to be a prayerful experience for all concerned. Over the next two weeks Fr Chinua will come and visit the students to help them with their preparation.

Have a great week!

Mr Brendan.
