Literacy

This week we celebrated National Simultaneous Story time. The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young and Heath McKenzie was the book chosen to share this year. This book got us thinking about everyone who is a winner - even those that don't come first!

The Grade 6 Learning and Innovation team organised a colouring competition for us to participate. The winners will be announced at the end of the week.

Information from the Melbourne Zoo has been very helpful as we have been reading as well as using our listening and observation skills when watching informative videos to find out about some very interesting animals.

We have been using this information to write facts about Orange-bellied Parrots, She-oak skinks, Eastern barred bandicoots and Corroboree frogs.   Next we will be looking at how these animals change over time, by examining their life cycles.

Maths

During Maths we have been working on finding and using different  strategies for adding and subtracting. Sometimes counting on and counting back are good strategies to use, but other times there are more efficient strategies, such as doubles and near doubles, making ten or partitioning numbers into their parts.

We also combined 2D shapes to make pictures. We had to name each shape and count the number of sides and corners.

Inquiry

As part of our Inquiry unit on Change, we have been learning about making predictions and observations. We conducted an experiment, where we placed a piece of celery in clean, clear water and another piece of celery in water that had food dye in it.

We made predictions and wrote about what we thought would happen to the celery.

Over the next few days we observed the changes in both pieces of celery,

and drew and wrote about our observations.
