Reading

This week it was National Simultaneous Story time. This year the story was 'The Speedy Sloth' by Rebecca Young and Heath McKenzie. The book focuses on the unlikely character of a sloth taking part in a running race. The speedy sloth is an inspiring picture story book that celebrates all winners ... especially those who don’t come first.

The Grade 6 Learning and Innovation team organised a colouring competition for us to participate. The winners will be announced at the end of the week.

Maths

In maths the children have been working on their addition and subtraction strategies. We have been focusing on strategies that are efficient to making adding and subtracting numbers quicker and easier.

Some of the strategies we have been working on include:

  • Starting with the biggest number and counting on or counting back
  • Doubles: 6+6=12
  • Adding 10: 32+10=42
  • Building to ten: 7+5= 7+3+2= 12
  • Near Double: 7+8= 7+7+1= 15

Here are the children working on their addition and subtraction skills.

Inquiry

In our inquiry unit about Change, the children have been focusing on how to conduct science experiments to observe changes. Last week we begun our first science experiment where we placed a piece of celery in a glass of water and another piece of celery in a glass of water with food colouring. We made a hypothesis, and wrote what we thought would happen to the celery. Then over the next few days we observed the changes in both pieces of celery, and drew and wrote about our observations.

The children found that as the celery drinks the water, the stem and the leave start to change and take on some of the colour from the food dye.

Why not try it yourself at home you can use celery or a white flower from your garden.
