Did you know this week is International Compost Awareness Week 7-13th of May? Autumn is the perfect time to collect the fallen leaves lying around just dying to be raked up and added to your compost. Those worms will thank you, the garden will look neater, your soil with be healthier. We can all do our share of reducing carbon pollution by avoiding landfilling organic materials. Sophie from 4D demonstrated her knowledge of compostable and non-compostable items.

As the weather quickly turns, students have been busy preparing the garden for the cooler months. Autumn leaves are continuously collected for composting. There are still capsicums to harvest. We planted brassicas (broccoli and cauliflower), lettuces, kale, beetroot, garlic and snow peas. Students learnt about companion planting when we planted garlic, leeks and onions near the brassicas because the odours deter moths and pests naturally.

In the kitchen, all the classes made ANZAC biscuits to commemorate ANZAC Day. Students enjoyed learning important facts and why ANZAC biscuits, poppies and rosemary are symbolic on this important date.

We also made some delicious gnocchi using potatoes from our garden.
