P-2 Learning Community

By Doreen Smider

The Prep to Year 2 Learning Community is always an exciting place to be whether you are a student or a teacher!  Our students have demonstrated great resilience throughout the school year especially when we recently experienced a power outage!

Our community is grateful for all the learning opportunities that come our way. This term we celebrated the 23rd Annual Simultaneous Story Time by reading “The Speedy Sloth” alongside two million students right across Australia! Please keep your eye out on our classroom windows for some fabulous Sloth related writing and artwork.

Sporting Clinics

Students recently took part in tennis coaching sessions with David Starling. We learnt basic ball skills, tested our hand and eye coordination, and of course challenged ourselves on the courts. Our AFL clinics again provided our students with further opportunities to learn new skills. A favourite skill was learning how to ‘scoop the ice cream off the pancake’ in other words, how to hand ball!

Reading 'Camp In'

Year 1 and 2 students were involved in a reading ‘camp in’ this term to support our inquiry unit ‘Living Things.’ Students worked with their camp buddies to learn about animals prior to our Melbourne Zoo excursion.

Melbourne Zoo

On Thursday 11th May, 95 excited students set off at 7:00 am for an adventure to the Melbourne Zoo. We experienced the friendly hospitality of the Zoo staff and were met with an amazing sunny day. Students discovered all areas of the zoo and were in awe of the Lions, Giraffe, Elephants, Lemurs, Reptiles and the Meerkats. Thank you to all the parent/carer helpers who made this wonderful day possible. Students have used their zoo experience to support their learning back at school through the writing and sharing of recounts, information and persuasive texts.

Recount Writing:

“I was happy at the Melbourne Zoo. First was Lion Gorge. We saw the lion and dingo and the snow leopard. One lion was running around the habitat. Next we went to the Wild Sea. We saw the seals. The seals were swimming around their habitat. Then we went to Going Wild. We saw the meerkats and King Bob meerkat was sitting on a log”.

Persuasive Writing:

“In my opinion I think Orangutans are the best zoo animal. First of all, why I believe Orangutans are the best zoo animal. They are the heaviest tree-dwelling animal. Also, they live in the rainforests of Asia. The biggest reason is that they are endangered. Everyone should believe me because Orangutans are amazing”.
