Sam

1/2AM

For your work with counting and place value. You showed how well you can count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Your work with reading and writing numbers was great too. Congratulations Sam, you are a star Mathematician!

FOUNDATION

Term 2 is really going by very quickly. Can you believe last Friday was Day 66 as we continue to count towards 100 Days of School!

During the “Footsteps Dance Program”, the Foundation students have impressed the instructor Danni with our fantastic listening. Already we have learnt all the steps to our dance and are continuing to practise with the music “Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride” from the movie Lilo and Stitch. As collaborators we are working together to dance in time and remember our dance moves. We cannot wait to share what we are learning with our families!

As Mathematicians, we have been learning how to add small collections together. We have been practising how to count all the objects together first and are now learning to count on from the biggest number!

As readers, we have read stories titled “What’s New at the Zoo” by Joan Waites and “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” by Dr. Suess to help us subitise then add the characters from the stories together. We engage in this type of learning to tell stories about the things we can add together. We have also had lots of fun, enjoying the sunshine outside while it lasts in our numeracy lessons. The Foundation students love going outside and participating in hands-on activities like our partitioning number bonds to help us learn how to break apart whole numbers.

Our parent helper timetables have been placed on the entrance doors to our learning spaces. Please write your name down in a time slot that is available. Please note, new timetables will be posted on a Thursday afternoon. As always, please remember to bring back any library bags by Tuesday so that we can borrow a new book on Wednesday.

Please ensure that your child is revising their sight words each night and not just practising the new set of words. The words on the larger ring also need to be looked at on a regular basis so that everyone becomes more confident when using the words in their writing.

Have a wonderful week.

YEAR 1/2

It has been a busy week in the Year 1/2 learning spaces! We have been working very hard to plan and organise our celebration of learning. We are looking forward to welcoming families into our school as we share our inquiry journey with you!

As part of the Resilience Project, this week we had the opportunity to reflect on the importance of showing empathy. We watched a video to understand what it means to be in another person's shoes. We were placed in groups and provided with a scenario. As collaborators we shared our ideas about what the person in the scenario might be thinking or how they might be feeling. Together we engaged in role play to share what we could do to show empathy.

As readers we are learning to summarise a fiction text. We have begun to listen to a variety of picture story books and this has been quite enjoyable! After reading, as communicators, we have been engaging in discussions to identify the features of fiction texts. As thinkers we are describing the setting and characters, identifying the problem and explaining the solution. To extend our thinking further we will have time to compare the features of fiction and non-fiction texts by creating a T-Chart. We are also looking forward to attending the Campbell Turnbull library this week to engage in a workshop about Indigenous Authors.

Mrs Monaghan joined our learning spaces this week to help us apply strategies as mathematicians, when we are solving addition problems. She used a bead rack to show us how to build to ten, identify double facts and add to ten. She read us a story and provided us with opportunities to make our own number sentences. We really enjoyed the challenge!

We look forward to seeing you all at the Celebration of Learning this week!

1/2 Team,

Alycia Marsico, Vania Sparano and Vicky Karalis

YEAR 3/4

As part of The Resilience Project this week we learnt about small and random acts of kindness. As part of this learning we engaged in talking about ways we can show empathy to others with small acts of kindness. Being a bucket filler is one way we can show kindness to others.

As mathematical thinkers, we have been engaging in learning about Maps and Location. We viewed many different maps with different features, we identified that maps can have: grids, a compass, key, labels, names, streets and landmarks. Collaborating in small groups, we engaged in a Chalk Talk thinking routine to view the different features of maps.

A reminder that Year 3/4 students will be attending an excursion to the Melbourne Museum on Wednesday 31st May 2023. Students are to wear their full sports uniform and bring a plastic bag with their brain food, recess, lunch and drink bottle. No backpacks are required. Please label the plastic bag with your child’s name and class.

A reminder that our Whole School Prayer and Assembly this week is hosted by 3/4BP, please join us as we acknowledge National Reconciliation Week!

We are in search of parent helpers who would like to assist Year 3/4 students in the learning spaces. Please pop your name on the timetable located upstairs in the Year 3/4 learning space window (use internal stairs) to share your availability (days and times). A current WWCC is required, as well as, participation in the Parent Help workshop. We look forward to welcoming you!

Have a great week!

YEAR 5/6

The 5/6 area is in full swing for Celebration of Learning on culture. The students are presenting an area of culture based on their interest.

In literacy, we are learning about persuasive writing and the persuasive devices used in different text types. In 5/6GT students wrote a persuasive text about Laudato Si in preparation for assembly last Friday.  They also used persuasive devices to create a poster based on their written text. OS and AO are doing similar on other topics of the children's interests.

In Mathematics, we are working on measurement of length. Students have access to many entry points in the topic as we examine how to convert between metric units of length, perimeter, area and circumference of circles.

We are working hard in Footsteps in readiness for their performance. Students are breaking into class groups and are able to watch each level perform offering support and feedback.

Inter School competition begins again soon, after a washout and a bye. The washout will be rescheduled and we will confirm the dates asap. In the meantime students are trialling in their chosen sports as well as experiencing others sports via intra school practice on Fridays.

Have a wonderful week,

5/6 Team

Olivia Sargent, Graham Troy and Aoife O’Flynn.
