Pentecost Sunday

Last weekend, we celebrated Pentecost Sunday. It is regarded as the 'Birthday of the Church' as it was the day the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles, commissioning them to go forth and proclaim the mission of Jesus and the Word of God in many different languages.

Pentecost means 50th as it is the feast celebrated in the 50th day after the Jewish Passover. It is also the feast observed by Christians on the 50th day after the feast of the Resurrection of Jesus. While originally, the Jewish Pentecost was a post-harvest thanksgiving feast, later it came to be included in remembrance of God's covenants with Noah and Moses. While Christmas celebrates the birthday of Jesus Christ in his physical body, Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church, for those born again into Christ's spiritual body.

It is a celebration that is closely unpacked with those students studying and researching about Confirmation as well as those candidates preparing for the sacrament.

All students throughout the school are learning about Pentecost. The Foundation and Year 1 students presented their understanding of the Holy Spirit in their classrooms as well as at the most recent assembly. Their 'tongues' of fire headbands could be well explained as a symbol of the presence of the Holy Spirit and the power to talk many different languages.

Whole School Mass

On Friday 16th June, we will come together as a whole school to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  In preparation for this Mass, we invite the school community to donate food as well as winter items such as blankets and winter clothing, that will be collected for our partner organisation, St Vincent de Paul Society. Food and winter items can be sent to your child's classroom to be collected by our Mini Vinnies Leadership Team.

It is an opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves at this very challenging and harsh time of year. Historically, this Mass was once known as the 'Poor Man's Mass' however, we go beyond helping the poor through our actions to consider others. As the motto of the St Vincent de Paul Society suggests; 'It is a hand up not a hand down' when we demonstrate action to assist others.

An invitation is extended to the whole school community to join us for this Mass celebration. Mass will be in the school hall at 12:30p.m. We hope to see you there.
