Year 9/10 Faith in Action

One of the new Religious Education courses developed in 2023 is titled “Faith in Action”

The title says it all – don’t just talk about it. Do it!!!

During Term one students focused on the theoretical aspects of Catholic Social Teaching & Living Justice Living Peace.

This term we are focusing on the practical aspects of the unit:

We are:

  • Knitting scarves & beanies for needy children
  • Sewing pouches for homeless wallabies & possums
  • Planting trees with LANDCARE & Friends of the Maribyrnong River at PipeMakers Park
  • Learning about Homelessness with excursions to the City by experiencing:
  1. City Walk - Walk the streets of Melbourne’s CBD to see a different angle. Students are encouraged to challenge their own assumptions and recognise the danger of single stories. Through interactive storytelling, students realise the strength of diversity in building a healthy city/society. Explores homelessness, stereotypes, hierarchy, colonisation, power, addiction, connection and more
  2. Empathy Workshop - In a hands-on, interactive workshop students are encouraged to ask: What is empathy? What happens when we empathise with people different to us? How does it change us and our society? Experientially we learn to transform our perspective, our schools, our community and our world.
  3. Meet thy Neighbour - Students practice the skill of empathy through a panel style Q&A conversation with a small group of people from diverse backgrounds and experiences of marginalisation in our city venue. By connecting with people we may have false assumptions about, students realise that these people are more than just stereotypes, they are our neighbours and we are all connected.

JDF & Leos

On Monday 15 May we ran our annual Athletics Day in Keilor. The beautiful weather did not disappoint and we had a beautiful day of athletics in the sunshine. It was also a great opportunity for all students to focus on their wellbeing by taking a day off from their studies to enjoy a picnic on the greens with their friends. Our social justice groups teamed up together to provide snacks, drinks and lunch, whilst raising awareness of the work Catholic Care provides to families across Victoria.

The JDF students ran a snack bar and the Marian LEOs once again provided a delicious bbq.  Together their efforts raised over $600. Thank you to all students and staff who supported their effects on purchasing items for Catholic Care.

Catholic Care services support people with mental illness, marriage breakdown, financial stress, family violence, drug abuse and disputes over custody arrangements, to name a few. This support empowers individuals and families in getting their lives back on track with the support of health and government organisations. They work with people from all walks of life and from diverse cultural backgrounds. Their caring and trained staff listen to those in need and work with them to achieve their individual goals.
