Council President message

To say 2020 is a year that will never be forgotten is probably an understatement.

January 2020 not only saw devastating bushfires effect our state but also heralded the very first coronavirus (COVID-19) positive person in Melbourne. Little did we know that this would be the start of a most extraordinary 12 months for MGSC, its students, staff and broader community.

As a school council 2020 was shaping up to be a busy and productive year, with many projects in the pipeline including the commencement of building works for the new Steam Centre.

Council members only managed to meet in person twice before life as we knew it changed dramatically.

By second term our school was being significantly impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions being put in place. It was so inspiring to see how the MGSC community reacted so nimbly to a situation that saw some days literally changing by the hour. As council president I could not have been prouder of our leadership team and staff who all spent countless hours redefining and reinventing each and every subject for a new ‘online/covid world’.

And then there were our students, who as a whole, responded so well to the situation they found themselves in. Despite each and every one of them no doubt facing many “Covid induced’ challenges from adjusting to home schooling, to the loss of precious activities such as theatre, music and sporting activities - our students rose to the challenge and made the very best they could of ‘the new normal’.

As a school council we supported the school leadership group to adjust to a never before experienced financial situation, as budgets were required to be severely altered and curtailed to represent a COVID-19 school year. I think I speak on behalf of all school council members when I say our college’s management did a miraculous job making ends meet while ensuring our students were still supported in their learning.

I am certain of one thing and that is that 2020, more than any year before it will never be forgotten and will also be reflected on for many years to come. Congratulations to every one of our MGSC students for completing what was a truly remarkable school year!
