Sport

Last Friday we were able to run the BMGS Athletics Carnival. This was a big day for all students and it was great to see everyone competing in numerous events. A big thank you is extended to all the staff and parents who worked on different events throughout the day. Without the support of the BMGS community these events would not run.

Thanks also to Bonnie Mamo and the P and F team who supplied lunch for everyone. It was great to have something delicious and warm on a cold day.

Winter Sport

Just a reminder that the first round of winter sport in Term 3 is at the end of Week 1. All training will recommence on the first day of school so please come prepared for training.

Everyone is encouraged to do some exercise in the holidays so that they can maintain their fitness in preparation for the last 4 weeks of the winter season. Semis and finals will be in Weeks 5 and 6.

Athletics Carnival

Some students still need to complete some field events from the Carnival. These will be completed over the next week. Please watch the screens at School for notices regarding these events.

Congratulations

NSWCIS Cross Country

On Thursday we had a number of students compete at the NSWCIS Cross Country at Eastern Creek. It was a wet and cold day and all the BMGS students ran well. Unfortunately none of the BMGS students qualified for the next level on this occasion.

ISA Athletics Carnival

The next event on our calendar is the ISA Athletics Carnival. The team list will be posted prior to the end of term. Students are encouraged to both return their notes early and to ensure that they have the correct singlet to wear on the day. These can be hired from the Uniform Shop.

After last week’s Cross Country Carnival all students are reminded that the only tights that can be worn to ISA are the BMGS tights and the only shorts/tracksuit pants should be the BMGS brand.

BMGS Firsts defeated St Spyridon, 29-28

The Firsts would like to thank Hayley for playing with us on Saturday. She played a very good game and was vital to our win. All the players fought hard to hold on to our lead, despite tiring in the last quarter against a St Spyridon side who had two extra players on the bench. As the game went goal for goal towards the end, all the team were to be commended for keeping cool heads and a determined attitude.  All the Firsts' players look forward to having a fit and healthy team for the run towards the finals in the Term 3.

BMGS Opens defeated St Spyridon, 38-33

Coming off a bye and with no training this week, I did expect that the girls would start the game more slowly than previous weeks and this turned out to be the case. We made it very hard for ourselves with some poor passing throughout the game. The first three quarters were very close against St Spyridon, who had improved remarkably since our previous match against them. Finally, the fourth quarter was much improved and we managed to pull together some very nice passages of play to secure the win by five goals. The team remains undefeated so far this season. Well done, girls.

BMGS Juniors were defeated by Chevalier College, 40-10

It was a hard game this week with only six players meeting a well-drilled Chevalier team. The girls went into the game with a very positive attitude, and worked hard to reach team targets at each quarter break. We were primarily focused on passing and our positioning on the court. Elizabeth had a great game at Centre, Bridey worked hard in Defence to stick to her player and Zara adjusted well to an unfamiliar role in the shooting circle. Well done on always supporting each other – through both the wins and the losses!

Girls' Football

Junior A were defeated by Redlands, 7-1

The girls had a great game on the weekend, despite the final score. Our team was tight in defence throughout the game, however, the intensity and accuracy of the passing from Redlands afforded them greater goal scoring opportunities and possession in the first half. Our second half was much more intense, with BMGS pressing more intently and counter- attacking more frequently with greater possession of the ball. Billy scored an impressive goal following a great build- up of ball play from the back line and through the midfield, which lifted the team’s confidence. I was really impressed with the intensity of defensive pressure our team applied consistently throughout the game. I look forward to seeing our team continue to build on our attacking play and goal scoring as the season continues!

BMGS Open C were defeated by St. Paul's Grammar School, 1-0

The Girls' Open C team had a challenging game against SPGS this week. We went into the game with only nine players and fought hard to be in possession most of the time. We had more shots on goal than the opposition and persisted hard on defence. It was half time and yet neither team had scored; coming into the second half we were all tired but kept pushing. Eventually the game was coming to an end and in the last few minutes the other team scored, leaving the result of the game 1-0. Although we lost this game, we had great team work and some good runs down the field. Everyone put in a lot of effort and aggression into the game, particularly as we did not have a full team on the field.

BMGS U14s defeated by Oxley, 0-7

The U14s brought their best this weekend for their rematch against Oxley. Although the defensive line tried hard to keep the opposition out, the footwork of the attackers was difficult to combat. By half-time our BMGS boys were down 4-0. We tightened up defense somewhat in the second half, but still conceded a number of goals. To their credit, our players kept their cool and tried to stay positive throughout the game. A special mention must be made of Finley for his outstanding goal (admittedly at the wrong end of the field).

BMGS U15s defeated Oxley, 7-2

This week the U15 boys had a thrashing victory against Oxley. With a standout performance by Harry Daniels in the first half, the half time score was 7-2. With a tactical change placing the attacking players in defence, and vice versa, the game was a more interesting and fair contest until the full time whistle.

Mr Ewan McMurtrie, Coach

BMGS Second XI defeated Oxley, 3-1

The BMGS boys Second XI had an excellent victory against Oxley on the weekend, winning 3-1. The defence had an terrific game, dealing with Oxley’s ‘kick and hope’ tactics, employing a no-nonsense approach and clearing the ball when under pressure. The excellent defensive display was supplemented with a fantastic attacking threat, brought to fruition with goals from Vaughn, Jack and Dom. This excellent play will give us great momentum leading into next week’s game.

BMGS First XI defeated by Oxley, 2-3

The First XI were met with challenging competition this weekend in Bowral. The match was tightly contested, with some excellent passages of play from the BMGS side. Unfortunately, our team found it difficult to convert opportunities into goals. With the lack of an assistant referee on the sideline, the back line was tested by opposing attackers playing close to our box. On one of these breakaways, Oxley were able to score the deciding goal, resulting in a score of 3-2 to the opposition.  This was a disappointing result for a game that featured great teamwork and communication from the BMGS First XI. The players should be proud of what they brought to the field this weekend. Thank you to Isaac Nicholls for playing up with Firsts this week; bringing one goal and one assist is certainly outstanding for a First XI debut.

BMGS U14 drew with Chevalier, 38-38

What an exciting game! With another 'reduced numbers' game, it was all out attack from the opening whistle. The extra space seems to suit this team and they went into the half-time break ahead 28-19 with Luke J-L, Rupert F and Arthur P-G all picking up first half tries and Arthur continuing his impressive 100% kicking record from last week with another 4 from 4 conversions.   Chevalier came out of the break with greater intensity and got on an early roll picking up a long range try. In a seesawing tussle, Chevalier finally won the second half 3 tries to 2, with Rupert picking up a second and Max Klein going over the line after a cracking 40m run down the left wing.  Some inaccurate goal kicking was the critical difference, and Chevalier was able to scratch out a draw in the dying minutes. The U14 team should be congratulated on an outstanding effort. Other notable performances came from William H, Henry W, Rafferty F and Jake E who all continue to improve in their first season and are increasing their involvement in their respective positions.

BMGS U15 were defeated by Chevalier, 47-33

The U15s were also involved in a high scoring nail-biter against the highly fancied Chevalier team, who are a contender for the title this year. BMGS was up 19-12 at half-time, following tries to Oliver S, Rupert F and River H. However, with a few players backing up from the U14s, BMGS started to tire in the second half and gaps started to appear in their defence. Despite this, Fred H scrambled over for a try and Hummer McLeod proved he did not need any help from his team mates from 30m out, when he took a quick tap and discarded the Chevalier defence with relative ease to post a meat pie next to the uprights.

BMGS were unlucky not to post a 40-all draw when River H was tackled on the try line; a turnover then ensued and Chevalier proceeded to go the length of the field to score in the dying moments. Chevalier finally ran out winners 47-33.  A cracking game!
