Year 10 Italian: students visit Templestowe Heights Primary School

As well as continuing to improve their speaking, reading and writing skills, Prof Allen & Prof Brogno’s Year 10 Italian students have also been busy creating mini Italian lessons to deliver to the grade 5/6 students at Templestowe Heights Primary School.

Some topics included food, animals, musical instruments, family members, numbers and of course sport with our students providing a range of activities for the primary school students to enjoy (think Celebrity Heads, bingo, Simon Says just to name a few.

We have had an affiliation with the Italian Department at Templestowe Heights Primary School for a number of years now. Long may it continue!

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

We had great fun teaching the students about word endings and plurals in Italian on Wednesday. The children were wonderfully well behaved and they seemed to enjoy the lesson. The visit was a lovely opportunity and we are grateful to have been allowed to partake in it.

We went with our Italian class to Templestowe Heights Primary school and taught some of the year 5 and 6 students colours in Italian. We had such a great time teaching, and the students were very good at listening and participating. It was a great experience for all, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We had so much fun we hope to be able to do something like this again.

On Wednesday, 19 May, our Year 10 Italian class (Prof Brogno’s) got the opportunity to teach year 5 and 6 students at Templestowe Heights Primary School. Leading up to the day, we worked hard on preparing our mini-lessons by brainstorming ideas as a class. Our group decided that we would organize two memory games for the students to play. They consisted of the Italian vocabulary for clothing items as well as fruits. Prior to going to primary school, we presented our mini-lessons to our class as a practice run. On the day, we got to interact with lots of eager students who were enthusiastic about learning new words in Italian. We feel this opportunity has assisted us in the growth of our confidence and communication skills and we enjoyed getting to know the students and experiencing teaching a primary school for a day.

Chinese: stimulating creative activities

I learnt that m&ms are still a favourite of most students when they engaged in m&m activities. It was one problem during the course of the activities - a number of m&ms went missing!

The activity tests student’s dexterity in using chopsticks. Have you ever tried to pick up m&ms using chopsticks? It is very challenging but great fun! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

An interesting project was embraced by the students in Years 7 and 8 when they were tasked to create 2D or 3D landmarks in China using match sticks. Many students in Year 7 created The Great Wall and Chinese temples. I was truly amazed at their creativity.

There was a change of direction for my year 9 students when their competition task was to research Chinese cuisine and create PPT and oral presentation. The highlight with this was individual did their own research on 25 different topics and come up with some magnificent slide shows and oral presentation. Some students also participated in Chinese chess.
