Students in Yr 5 are learning about game design principles, applying them to create theirown Board Game with a Resilience and Well Being theme.
Parts of game design they are exploring are Rules, Components, Fair, Challenging, and Original and Sustainable materials. This Technologies and Health program is designed to build 21st Century skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving by using the design technology process.
It is hoped that by following the process students in their groups build a board game that not only works, but is entertaining, fair, and fun, and will be enjoyed by students across the classroom.
So far students have Mind Mapped their creative ideas and analysed which resources are suitable. This week’s challenge is to create a prototype for testing, which leads to the building of the eventual board game.
Mr Criddle and I are excited to see student's board games come to life as they grow their understanding of design principles.
Year 5, Room 5 have been working hard on our HASS and Technology projects. We are Building a ‘Swan River Colony’ using grid paper and paint. We discussed the needs and problems with building a colony and have been working on it over the past few weeks. Each group has to collaborate and justify their decisions to other groups regarding the reasons for the position of land development and the different buildings present on their settlement. We used net diagrams, and grid paper to map out the perimeter and area to place various buildings, farms, and ports. We hope to exhibit our work in the library for the whole school to enjoy.
The students in Room 6 have been busily researching, planning, and creating their dwelling structure for our Design Technologies project.
We have been learning about the Swan River Colony and the types of shelters which were occupied by the convicts and settlers.
Students are working with their group members to construct a dwelling that would have been similar in style to a shelter of that time.
Many natural resources such as leaves, twigs, and sand have been gathered by groups. Students were also given balsa wood to use as the main material, clay and aluminium foil to act as wrought iron.
The goal is to not only construct a dwelling suitable for that era but to ensure that it is windproof and waterproof!
Room 7, we have been learning about tessellation. We designed our own tiles and used them to cover a page. We have a new appreciation for tilers, and understand why most tiles are square or rectangular. Here are some of our creations.
We are enjoying our reading groups this term. Using our higher-order thinking, we have had discussions using the 6 Thinking Hats as our framework and SCAMPER to generate creative ideas. Reader’s Theatre is always engaging, and we look forward to presenting our plays next week.
Room 12, Year 5 students are learning about Australian Colonies. First, we looked at timelines and placed dates and events that occurred between the First Fleet and Federation on our large class timeline. (You can see some of our timeline behind us). We then chose a colony in Australia and developed an Information Report using Pages on our iPads.
This year, the Year 5 students in Room 12 are very lucky and have iPads in the classroom for each student to use. We, therefore, used our iPads to research teacher-given links and information leaflets about our settlement. Using our notes, we input this information into a Pages scaffold. We found pictures of the first Governor and a map of the colony. This information was also placed into our information report. They turned out so well that Mr and Mrs Gardin were super proud of our work. We converted our document to PDF and uploaded it to Connect.
