Sports Report

Yr 7 Girls Futsal
On Thursday 31st October, 16 of our Year 7 students entered two teams in the Divisional Competition. Eleven of our players scored goals over their six matches. Our teams over the day won 11 of their 12 matches. We scored 43 goals to 2, from our 12 matches. Four schools in the competition divisions will now play off in the finals to decide the best competing Victorian Team. Goal Scorers over the day were Camille Roche (10), Scarlett Kinder (5), Violet Basic (5), Scarlett Paker-Wright (4), Charlotte Atkin-Davies (4), Polly Wilson (3), Ayda Canon (3) Jamima Madder (3) Saskia Cormier (3), Eva Tyrell (1), Eva De Felice (1). This was a great group of students who behaved so well, played with great determination and encouraged each other and their opponents.

Yr 7 Boys Futsal
We fielded 3 teams with 4 Year 10 coaches. Our B and C teams played off in a second division both winning through to the semi’s and playing each other in the final. Our A team won all of their games and then narrowly beat Epic in the semi finals. In the final we had one of our best players Kaan Kilic off with cramp. It was left to Alex Mina to score double goals. Still we trailed 3-2 equalising with 10 seconds to go. In extra time with Kaan making a brave comeback we scored twice to win an exciting final. Our students all played their hearts out and achieved some remarkable results. Their behaviour, skill, determination, teamwork and sportsmanship made them a pleasure to supervise. Our 4 senior coaches - Eamon Coates, Jordan Katsouranis, Stan Nikolas and Liam Rooms encouraged, supervised and passed on their knowledge to new Year 7 stars.

Yr 8 Boys Futsal
Well done to our three Yr 8 Boys' Futsal teams who recently competed in the Darebin Futsal Cup. All three teams had some very competitive matches throughout the day. All 3 teams finished on top of their pools to play off in the Finals. Northcote Gold defeated Thornbury to become overall winners on the day and now move through to the NMR Indoor Futsal Challenge cup to be played on November 14. We would like to thank our student coaches Eamon Coates and Jordan Katsouranis who ran training and team selection and also coached on the day.
Yr 7 Boys Volleyball
The yr 7 volleyball squad competed at the regional competition recently. It was a great test for our team who have been preparing for Victoria Volleyball Junior Open in December. They had convincing wins over most opponents throughout the day. Unfortunately, they could not overcome the strength of the Eltham academy squad. The team have come away with some focus points for training and will hopefully get the chance to redeem themselves against Eltham in December. The team played in very good spirits and their coaches, Erin Gallagher and Alicia Chant, did a great job.

Yr 9/10 Girls Cricket State Quarter Final
What a great effort for our team to win through to the last eight teams in Victoria. On Wednesday 6th November our students travelled to Bendigo to play Marist College in a 20 over per team match. Led by our captain Amelie Sibillin our plan was retire our batters after 8 overs and give every player a bowl. Our first 4 batters - Rosie Roger, Rose Stewart, Amelie Sibillin and Riley Magee all batted well taking us past 50 with no wickets lost. With 4 other players batting we finished at 1/79. With all of our girls bowling 1,2 or 3 overs, Marist College passed our score finishing on 4/123. We didn’t win in the scorebook but we won in giving everyone a chance to bat and bowl. A more win-orientated plan of only using our best 4 batters and bowlers could have seen a different result. I was so proud of our team and their inclusive approach. They have all showed great development as a team since Year 7. Departing at 8.00am playing for 3 hours and getting back at 5.00pm was a long but such a rewarding and educational day for everyone involved. A thank you to Sophie Hargreave’s grandmother driving up to support the team. Sophie and Claudia Hetherington wore several batting bruises. Lily Tagliano caught and bowled one of their best batters. Audrey Kennedy bowled 3 overs all on the stumps. Lulu Beveridge(keeper) and Emma Summers both played with injuries. Erin Gallagher showed great bowling improvement.

Victorian All Schools Athletics
NHS had 8 students competing across 15 events at the Victorian All Schools Track & Field Championships over the past two weekends.
On weekend 1, seven NHS students braved the wet and windy weather to compete in nine distance events. It was a big weekend of racing with Doug Buckeridge winning the U17 men’s 1500m on Saturday and Archie Noakes only beaten by the reigning national champ in the U16 men’s 2km Steeplechase to take out the silver medal on Sunday.
Grace Young also claimed the silver medal in the U17 women’s 5km walk, while the Tabit twins Niamh and Amira placed 4th and 5th in the U15 women’s 1500m.
Congrats to all the runners. Full results below.

On weekend 2, in slightly less foul weather (plenty of rain but at least it wasn't as windy) NHS had six students competing. Niamh Tabit finished 2nd in the Womens U15 3000m, Archie Noakes and Javier Tabit finished 5th and 14th in the Mens U16 3000m and Doug Buckeridge placed 1st in the Mens U17 3000m. Outside of the 3000m, Amira Tabit came 8th in the final of the Womens U15 800m and Sasha Stanitzki, flying the flag for NHS in a sprint event, came 6th in his heat of the Mens U16 200m.
With 5 medals and 11 top 10 finishes, NHS's athletes put in a very strong performance in trying conditions over the two weekends and all the competitors can be proud of their efforts. To put NHS's haul of 5 medals in the distance events (the 1500m, 3000m, steeplechase and the walk) in perspective, this was tied for third most for any school in the state, and was tied with the Bendigo SE sports school as the most by any school in the public sector.
Duncan Buckeridge
We thank our parents Cameron Noakes and Duncan Buckeridge, for sending through reports on our students who have competed in the All Schools Athletics. Although this is not a school arranged event, our students are still representing NHS. We love to hear about how our students’ achievements outside of school.
