Careers

Year 10 Students

We have completed our Careers program in Life Skills classes with the Year 10 students. Students now have a hurdle task to complete which involves researching which program they would like to undertake for 2022/2023 (VCE or VCAL). If they are selecting VCE, they have been asked to consider which subjects would suit them or which they are required to complete for access to courses which interest them. If selecting VCAL, they are thinking about which off-campus vocational training they would like to undertake as part of their program.

During Careers sessions, students were given a green folder which we hope will travel with them through Brookhill and beyond. It contains all sorts of useful information about careers resources which can assist with their career and course research. They are able to add to this folder each time they collect information which is course and/or career related. It should be noted that ‘Careers’ is not something a student passes or fails, it is all about making wise decisions. In order to make these wise decisions students need to understand themselves, their skills and abilities, interests and values (and the Morrisby Profile should be a great help with this) and undertake in-depth research around areas of interest. In combination, this will assist students to make decisions which will allow them to experience a positive Year 11 and Year 12.

This is a very exciting time for Year 10 students as it is a time when they will have much more say over what they study.  In addition to undertaking their own research, however, there is a lot of help available: Careers staff in B21, Life Skills teachers, Heads of House, a VCE Information evening on Wednesday 14 July and a VCAL Information evening on Monday 19 July and a 30 minute one-on-one interview with a member of the Careers team in Term 3. Students are encouraged to make contact and to ask questions. It is an exciting time as they begin to plan their futures, looking forward with eager anticipation to a future they can begin to shape and to embrace.

Year 12 students

On Friday 21 May, Year 12 VCE students attended an excursion to La Trobe University. We were very excited to be able to take the students onto a University campus – it has been quite some time since this has been possible. The weather was great, the program stimulating and the students very much enjoyed the experience. Their behaviour was exemplary and they were a credit to the College. A report on the excursion appears in the Brookhill section of this newsletter.
