Home Learning

Thank you to all students, parents and staff for supporting the transition back to Home Learning. Fingers crossed that we can resume learning back at school soon!

Prep News

Miss Gemma Jackson (Prep AHOS)

Another fortnight has passed in Prep and we have been busy learning. In Mathematics, we have commenced our learning about ordinal number. We loved learning about ordinal number because we got to have running races and follow steps to make ‘Milo Balls’. They were delicious! We can order places 1st to 10th.

In Integrated Studies, we said goodbye to our chicks as it was time for them to go back to the farm. We ended up with three roosters and four hens. To conclude our farm animals learning, we had a go at designing our own farm to demonstrate our understanding of what farm animals need to survive. We had a lot of fun being creative. Week 7 is looking a bit different for us, but our teachers are so proud of how we have been on Zoom!

Year 1 and 2 News

Miss Hannah Petterson (Year 1/2 AHOS)

The Year 1 and Year 2 students have embraced Home Learning once again. They have such a positive can-do attitude and have shown they are ready for anything. Teachers are super proud!

The Year 2 students were able to showcase their learning in the Fairview Assembly this term. Year 2A recently presented their learning all about chance and probability. This has been the focus in Maths and they have had lots of fun exploring different games involving likely, unlikely, certain and impossible.

On Friday 21 May, Year 1 students were given the opportunity to visit two calves at the Aitken College farm. The students enjoyed visiting the calves and learning some facts about them along the way. Upon returning to the classroom, students completed a piece of writing based on their experience. It was a wonderful day – check out the photos!

Year 3 and 4 News

Mrs Anne Adams (Year 3/ 4 AHOS)

Year 3 and Year 4 students loved joining Lucinda Gifford, the author of ‘Whitney and Britney Diva Chickens.’ She walked the children through the writing and illustrating process. The students worked on drawing characters for their books. As an author and illustrator, she began with the drawings first. These then gave her ideas for a story. She looked online for research, settings and characters for her books for inspiration. After that she drew many rough drawings and rough texts before coming up with the perfect book.

Her tips include:

  • Press lightly with your pencil so you can go over your drawings to perfect them.
  • Start with shapes.
  • Look at what’s around you to draw.

Many thanks to the Library staff for organising this!

Year 5 and 6 News

Mr Nigel Keegan (Year 5/ 6 AHOS)

Well done to all Year 5 and Year 6 students on how you have slotted back into Home Learning. This is an opportunity for students to foster independence and personal responsibility to manage their own learning, and they are doing a great job so far! Students continue to work hard on subject work, assessments and assignments as the end of term quickly approaches.

Students have competed in our local Interschool competition with great success. Three of our winter Interschool sport teams are leading the district table: girls netball and both the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams, who remain unbeaten. Well done to all students and coaches involved.

Helping Girls to Stand Tall

By Michael Grose (Leading Parenting Educator-Parenting Ideas)

“Helping girls manage conflict is complex. Unlike conflict between boys which is loud, boisterous, and over as quickly as it began, most conflict between girls lingers on, taking up unwanted mind space and harming their mental health. “She’s so mean to me. I hate her,” is the type of statement that many parents have heard their daughters utter.

Girls handle conflict in one of three ways: like a shark (aggressively), a turtle (passively) or an owl (assertively). Let’s look at each style:

When solving conflicts it is very important for all students to learn ‘I- statements’ to help with the expression of feelings and to find resolutions. A simple script for teaching I-statements is:

When you…….……..……. I feel/felt……..……..……. because………..…..…. I would like ……..…………..
