NUMERACY at Kildare
So, what has been happening at KCC in the area of Numeracy?
All Maths teachers are working hard to engage and challenge our students across all year levels to develop their numeracy and mathematical skills. The Year 7 and 8 classes are working on the Maths Pathway program which offers a personalised learning model with differentiated assessment. This then flows directly into the stage 5 and 6 Maths courses in Years 9-12.
At the beginning of the year we welcomed back Abel Anwar and Tom O’Brien, two HSC students from 2019. Abel and Tom have been busy working in Maths classes under the guidance of the classroom teacher. Their role is to support the learning of the students in the classroom and you will generally see them sitting with students in a one-on-one capacity or helping small groups of students to develop their mathematical skills. Tom and Abel support our students across all years at KCC, from Year 7 through to Year 12.
Kildare students are also very fortunate to have the assistance of other members of The Learning Support team, both in the Maths classrooms and with the Quicksmart Numeracy program. Mrs Gray has been working specifically with many of our Year 9 students and Mrs Anaya Osuna, Ms Belling, Mr Galvin, Mrs Hope, Mrs Lihou, Mr McTaggart, Mr Measday, Mrs Vidler and Mr Ward are all working hard to provide numeracy support to many of our students.
Mrs Cosier has been working with a group of about 17 highly proficient Year 7 students, once a cycle engaging them in challenging maths activities. They have looked at Fibonacci number sequence and the Golden ratio as well as patterns involved in stacking coins. Students have enjoyed the opportunity to work with others from outside their usual Maths class on stimulating activities.
All KCC students are encouraged to utilise their time both in their classrooms and in Coaching, and to take advantage of the many support structures in place at Kildare to develop and enhance numeracy skills.
