Cultural Understanding and Safety Training (CUST)

At the beginning of this school term,  all the staff at SMPS undertook Cultural Understanding and Safety Training led by Koorie Engagement Support Officers (KESO) Stephanie Briggs and Brian Walker. The CUST was an important way for our school staff to gather and to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, histories and culture. The professional development included:

  • Welcome to Country/Acknowledgement of Country
  • History – pre - and post-colonisation
  • Aboriginal communities today
  • Inclusion and reflective practice
  • Aboriginal perspectives in the Victorian Curriculum

The training provided the school with an opportunity for us to review our existing whole-school approaches to Koorie cultural inclusion and to think about how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives can be embedded within our curriculum content.

We are working closely with our KESO Stephanie to acknowledge significant events throughout the year as well as embedding Aboriginal perspectives into our curriculum.

STAR HEALTH

Welcome to the Wellbeing corner of the school newsletter supported by Star Health. Here you will find tips and strategies for keeping your mouth and bodies well. Our Term 3 focus is ‘Stay Well’. We will be sharing tips on how we can look after our health and wellbeing during the pandemic.

How much sugar is in your trolley? In early August, Australia celebrated Dental Health Week. Dental Health Week is a great reminder to look after our oral health. This year’s theme is ‘How much sugar is hiding in your trolley?’, which encourages us to explore the relationship between sugar and tooth decay.

Sugar feeds the bacteria in the mouth which results in acid being produced. This acid attacks your teeth causing tooth decay. Reducing the amount of sugar we eat can help to prevent tooth decay.

One of the best ways to know how much sugar we are eating is to check the nutrition information panel on products. Try choosing foods that contain less sugar per 100g per you are doing your supermarket shop next. See the picture below to learn what to look out for on the nutrition information panel.

Choose products with less than 15g sugar per 100g/ml
