New Building Progress

Our new school rises from the ground

The final removal of asbestos and the last of the demolition taking place at the old Shepparton High School site allowed a window of opportunity for staff and media to take part in an on-site inspection of the latest development of GSSC’s new facilities on Monday.

Heavy machinery was due to arrive the next day, bringing another 90 pre-cast walls ready for erection of Neighbourhood Building number 3 – the first of five substantial buildings comprising the new GSSC.

It was also set to make the building site a hive of activity and an occupational health and safety risk to visitors.

The 22 pre-cast walls already in place on the Monday were impressive enough for media coverage to take place. Teachers Cate Eddy and Kylie Hoskin joined Genevieve Simson to talk about the excitement of staff in contributing to the final fit-out of learning spaces as the build progresses.

There are also lots of economic pluses to the local community. Builders Hansen Yuncken have had a local office for almost 100 years and about 90 per cent of the sub-contractors to date come from Greater Shepparton-based companies. The builders are about to “up” their on-site construction crew from around 80 to several hundred workers.

The last six months of work on the GSSC development have primarily involved demolition of old buildings, removal of debris and the pouring of footings and provision of underground services.

In recent days, however, it has been impressive to see how fast our new facilities are effectively rising from the ground. New signage, noting the site will be the home of the “new” GSSC in 2022, has also been erected this week.

This is sure to interest and inspire as GSSC begins to take shape – a much bigger development than the recently built Shepparton Court House and the impressive Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), which is now nearing completion.
