PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

It has been quite a while since we have been able to publish our Newsletter. Since our last edition in Term 1 the world has certainly changed. Thankfully things at Lake Illawarra High are returning to normal, although as you would be aware we still have restrictions in place on some of the things that we are able to do.

One of the most exciting things to have occurred over the last couple of months is that Lake Illawarra High was one of three schools in the Illawarra to be chosen to be a STEM School of Excellence. This partnership between us, Corimal High and Warrawong High is going to allow us to access a large number of resources for our students as well as professional learning for our staff. It will also involve us establishing close partnerships with many of the big manufacturing businesses within our area. We are currently in our planning stage and I will keep everyone informed of new developments as they happen.

School reports for Year 7 – 10 will be distributed in the next week or so. As you will see they are slightly different in format due to the lockdown that we experienced during the semester. Also we will be unable to have our usual Parent -Teacher afternoon. However, it is extremely important that parents and caregivers contact staff to have a chat about their childs progress. This can be done by either emailing the teacher(s) you would like to speak to or by contacting the school on 4296 3844.

This week will see the school community choose our School Captains for 2020/2021. We have had ten high quality young people nominate….best of luck to all of you. Each of you would do a wonderful job as leaders of our school!

Warm regards

DEPUTIES' DESK

The start to Term 3 has definitely been very busy with the first few weeks flowing by very quickly. Year 11 and 12 have received their reports and hopefully they have had time to read the feedback provided by their teachers. Years 7-10 will receive their reports in the coming weeks. The distribution of the reports this year have been delayed due to the COVID-19 working from home period, allowing staff to effectively assess the progress of students and provide meaningful feedback on their learning. With the nature of the restrictions around the number of people currently allowed on the school site there will be some changes to how we conduct Parent/Teacher interviews this year.  An information letter will be distributed with the reports outlining how this will occur. As always, we welcome contact with our families and look forward to continuing to work together to ensure the best possible outcomes for our students.

Recently there have been some issues with some students using Social Media platforms to intimidate or harass others. This is not acceptable and we will continue to use the school Wellbeing structures to deal with this. These matters can also be referred to the Police if families wish to pursue this course of action. It has been quite concerning to hear that a number of students have shared passwords and that multiple people at times have had access to the same account. It is vital that passwords are safe, secure, only known to the account holder and should be different for each type of account you hold. It is a timely reminder that if it is your account then you are responsible for what is posted.

This issue highlights the need to revisit one of our PBL posters from around the school.

Before you say or post anything you need to THINK:

T- Is it True?

H- Is it Helpful?

I- Is it Inspiring?

N- Is it Necessary?

K- Is it Kind?

If it doesn’t meet this criteria then you should keep it to yourself!

If there are issues with students using these platforms inappropriately please screenshot the posts and bring the images to Mr Meizer or Mr Wilson so that we can begin to deal with them.
