Term 3

Welcome to Term 3

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all new and returning families to our fabulous school. Year Five students have begun the term focused and determined to learn despite the return to Learning From Home. We have a busy term ahead and we are proud to share with you the learning that is taking place in our virtual classrooms.

Literacy – Poetry

Students will expand their repertoire of poetic language devices, from figures of speech to symbolism, and hone in on vocabulary choices that impact the varying degrees of formality in writing. They will move beyond pre-existing knowledge of rhymes and look to investigate how deep emotions, ideas, and imagery can be evoked through sensory details, perspective and selective phrasing.

What you can do at home:

Ask your child to share their poem with you. Use this opportunity to have them reflect on their author strategies that they have used and explain the purpose of using them.

Numeracy – Financial Maths

In the first two weeks the students will be learning skills such as calculating change to the nearest five cents, find the percentage of sale items, calculating best buys and solving problems involving profit and loss. They will transfer these skills to a real-life project, where students will create a financial plan to budget living at home during this period.

What you can do at home

Inquiry - Media

This term’s Inquiry unit focuses on the question, ‘How does the media impact our perception of the world?’ We are living in a time where false information shared on a large scale has the ability to influence the actions of not just every-day people, but governments!  In this unit, students will be able to analyse the reliability of information and the cultural and financial reasons that influence media bias. This unit of learning will be supported by Global Goal 5, Gender Equality.

What you can do at home

Expose your child to a news bulletin once a day. Discuss the topics that were covered and the manner in which they were presented. Were they portraying someone or an event in a specific way, instead of just reporting the news?

Social and Emotional Learning

The focus of our Social and Emotional learning this term is to support students in prospering during the second stage of Learning from Home. We will analyse the challenges that arise as a result of self-isolation, and develop a bank of strategies to assist learners during this time. Our unit of learning is responsive to the needs of the students, however the three key areas of focus are resilience, emotional intelligence and independence.

What you can do at home

With your child, complete 30 minutes of active exercise a day. This can be any of the physical activities/brain-breaks on the website or simply just going for a walk.
