Mathematics Faculty

Term 2 has been busy with an examination period for all students. We are delighted with the majority of our students, who have been working hard in preparation for the examinations and trying their best.

During mid Term 1, students from Year 7 -12 were sent home with letters indicating the extra maths support programs provided in and outside of school hours to develop their independent learning skills. Junior students have access to either Mangahigh or SmarterMaths program to develop their mathematics and numeracy skills. These programs can be used to provide extra practise at home to consolidate their learning.

Year 11

Year 11 students have started their senior study with a positive attitude and are developing their independent learning skills through goal settings.

Standard Mathematics

Standard Mathematics students have been exploring the Statistical representation, Algebra skills with application to real world scenarios like Blood Alcohol Content, Stopping distance and Medication quantities. They have also engaged in Financial Mathematics to manage earnings and expenditures. These topics have given them significance in their learning in through linking to everyday life. Students will further learn Analysis of Data and Measurement of 2D and 3D objects.

Advanced Mathematics

Advanced Mathematics students have consolidated their skills in the topics of Algebra and Trigonometry. They have explored new concepts on Functions and understand the real-life problem representation in geometrical forms. The topic of Trigonometry provided connection to industry of Civil Engineering, Orienting and Construction. They will be learning in future Introductory Calculus and Probability of events.

Extension Mathematics

Extension Mathematics students further explored Functions in context with addition or multiplication of two functions and sketching the curve. They are currently exploring the optimal arrangement of items with Permutation and Combination of possibilities and probability of occurrence of such events. They will also explore advanced Trigonometric equations and identities.

Numeracy

Numeracy students have been building their skills in mathematical and numeracy skills in context to real life application/ everyday mathematical computation. These skills are enhancing their learning in the Standard course if students have chosen both courses.

Year 12

Year 12 students are over halfway through their final year of Senior Study. They have been working diligently on harder concepts, understanding building on their Preliminary course.

Standard Mathematics

Standard Mathematics students have been busy learning about Financial Mathematics involving Annuity and loan repayments. They have also improved their knowledge and skills in Measurement with further Trigonometric skills and Scale drawings. They will be learning Network concepts, the world we live in, with well-connected and Regression plots.

Advanced Mathematics

Advanced Mathematics students have been learning Statistical Analysis and Transformations of functions with application to Physics and real-life problems involving Exponential and Logarithmic functions. They are currently consolidating Differential Calculus to find optimal solutions to problems in everyday life like maximizing volume with minimal usage of material. In the second semester, they will be learning Integral Calculus and Financial Mathematics.

Numeracy

Numeracy students have developed lot of confidence to apply their learnt skills to organise events and the cost involved to run an event. They are consolidating their mathematical and numeracy skills to apply their knowledge for workforce and everyday life situations.

We encourage our Stage 6 Standard and Advanced students to utilise Edrolo to consolidate their learning in class and to prepare for examination involving HSC Style questions.

To all our students, we encourage them to participate in the annual mathematics competition Australian Mathematics Competition, which will be held on 3rd August 2022. Please ask your child/children/ward to participate when the notes comes home, further information is on our school website.
