CAPA Faculty Report

Year 11 Drama

Australia’s award-winning playwright Alana Valentine comes to Kingswood High School!

Year 11 Drama students have been provided the opportunity of a lifetime!

Kingswood High School Year 11 Drama students will be part of an exciting Verbatim Theatre Project commissioned by Q Theatre based at The Joan in Penrith. “Pobblebonk” is a new verbatim theatre play to be created with students from 4 local high schools and Kingswood High School has successfully won the privilege of participating in this fantastic opportunity.

This program has been developed to allow Year 11 Drama students an opportunity to work with an industry professional and the playwright of one of their HSC prescribed texts.

Alana visited Kingswood High School, Monday, May 16 and conducted a 2 hour workshop with Year 11 Drama students. She conducted interviews using the voices and perspectives of our Year 11 Drama students regarding post-lockdown life, their relationship with social media and how they navigate real world interactions. Using these stories, Alana Valentine will then write her new play and have the final draft submitted December this year.

The students had a phenomenal time with the famous Alana Valentine and have learnt a great deal about Verbatim Theatre and knowledge required for the HSC Drama course regarding the playbuilding process of Verbatim Theatre performance style.

(Visual Design) Community Project - STAPLES!

Year 12 Visual Design students have been working towards developing, in conjunction with Mama Lana’s Community Foundation, a fantastic and interactive cookbook. ‘STAPLES - Food for Change’ is a future philanthropic CAPA/TAS - KHS faculty initiative that is being created to provide cheap alternative recipes and activities, with a focus on catering towards teens and young adults learning to cook. Our Visual Design class has been developing a range of compositions for the cover and layout of the final charity product. With each opportunity we meet the design brief and develop our real world skills to produce a final product. The class has made steady progress toward the final goal and look forward to using their design skills in a tangible way and to give back to a good cause.

Step Dance

Step Dance have been creating a variety of works in preparation for upcoming auditions with the Penrith Valley Performing Arts Festival and School Spectacular. The students have been focusing on learning the tools of creating works and have implemented this into small group compositions. Most recently we have junior students creating a lyrical piece around care and reliance with senior students exploring Irish dance influences in a contemporary space.

STEP Drama

STEP Drama is a Student Talented Enrichment Program dedicated to upskilling our Gifted and High Potential students and fine tune their performance, voice and body language skills in a highly supportive environment with access to exceptional resources and training. This year, students have been devising their own performance, enhancing their scriptwriting and literacy skills as well as creatively developing social, political, cultural and personal themes through fantastic characterisation. They have been practically exploring their self-devised play "The Pod". Simultaneously, students have been rehearsing their Physical Theatre self-devised performance "Like Wildfire" for the upcoming Penrith Valley Performing Arts Festival. The students together with their teacher are thankful for the continued support their families and school provide. Keep an eye out for ticket sales to the Penrith Valley Performing Arts Festival.
