Principal's Update

Paul Clohesy

Following on from Catholic Education week last week, this week we are celebrating and recognizing Reconciliation Week.

Sacred Heart Primary school was very fortunate to have Dr Miriam Rose Ungunmerr Baumann visit them on Monday.

Dr Miriam is the current Senior Australian of the year and is a renowned Aboriginal Artist, Activist, Writer and Public Speaker who is dedicated to creating bright and fulfilling futures for Aboriginal children and youth.

Trinity students Tamzyn Harty and Maddy Connor joined Deputy Principal Rachel McGennisken and I in a visit to Sacred Heart to meet Dr Miriam Rose and hear her speak. We were also entertained by some Aboriginal dancers. Among her many achievements, Dr Miriam Rose was the first fully qualified Aboriginal teacher in the Northern Territory and is the founder of the Miriam Rose Foundation.

Miriam Rose was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1998 for her services to Aboriginal education and art. Miriam has also worked as Principal at the St Francis Xavier School at Daly River.

It was our absolute pleasure and honour to have had the opportunity of meeting Dr Miriam Rose and I would like to thank Sacred Heart for extending the invitation to us.

This week we began the interview process for our prospective 2023 Year 7 students. As always, it is a positive experience getting to meet so many of our future students and their families and finding out more about the students to enable us to better educate and care for them from the moment they walk through the Trinity College gates.

The College Concert Band has been practicing hard over the last month or so in preparation for their recent workshop and performance with Apollo Bay P-12 and their performance at Sacred Heart Primary.

Many members of the band are new musicians who have only just started learning their instruments. It is wonderful to see the amazing improvement of the band which has come about due to their hard work and the hard work of their instrumental tutors and our committed and dedicated music staff, Kelly Kerr and Grace Wiedemann.

There has been a lot happening at the school over the last fortnight including lots of sporting events, the oratory competition and the Year 10 social to name just a few. I hope that as many students as possible are making the most of these extra-curricular activities. This week we are taking part in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in support of the Cancer Council. We are also collecting winter clothing and blankets as part the St Vincent de Paul Winter appeal.

Kind Regards

Paul Clohesy, Principal
