Dear Families

Winter Appeal

A big thank you to our caring school community that have continued to support the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.  The Catholic Social Teaching principles of ‘Life and Dignity of the Human Person’ and ‘Preferential Option for the Poor’ provide a strong message of how important it is for us to display care and respect for those doing it hard at this time. Our Healthy Community Leaders continue to promote this effort at our assemblies.  With the onset of the cold weather, many can do with our donations through St Vincent de Paul, you can provide further donations, including financial support here.

We’ve been successful with our application for a 2022 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant for our project. OLHC is one of 1,054 primary schools and early learning centres throughout Australia receiving a Woolworths Junior Landcare grant to help grow our next generation of environmental champions.  The students and teachers are looking forward to working and learning from this project and we’ll keep you updated on the results.

Can you help?  We are looking for interested parents to assist with this project.  Please contact Barb Cumming, (Barbara.Cumming@olhceltham.catholic.edu.au) who we congratulate on securing the grant and creating the project brief, if you are interested in helping out on this exciting project.

Italian Day

On Wednesday June 1 we had our first Italian Day for a number of years.  It was a spectacular day highlighted by a sea of red, white and green!  We started our day with an assembly and parade and the range of creative and colourful outfits was a delight to see.

Following the parade our Year 6 leaders took charge of a range of sessions that all students participated in.  Once again there were great displays of creativity and many engaging activities. After our delicious pizza, pasta and gelato lunch (thanks Denise and canteen helpers) we enjoyed a live performance called Dammi il Cinque (Give me Five). As you can see from the picture below, it certainly received the ‘thumbs up’ from our students.  Please take the time to view the report and photos in this newsletter.

Excursions

Students and staff were excited to go on excursions earlier this week.  As part of their Age of Exploration inquiry, our Year 3/4s visited the Polly Woodside exhibition and our Year 5/6s visited Sovereign Hill as part of their Museums in Motion inquiry.  Both excursions provide experiential learning opportunities for our students. You can see photos and reports of the two excursions in this newsletter (Polly Woodside, Sovereign Hill)

Reminder

Closure Day: Following the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, we have a school closure day for staff professional learning.  Staff will be continuing our work on developing our knowledge and strategies on our Intervention Framework and Reading.  There will be no student attendance on this day.
